premises, where the items sold are made by the occupant of the premises at which the sale takes <br />place, or by friends of such occupant, and where the sale is conducted by said occupant or <br />friends of such occupant. Items for sale shall be made in the home and not purchased for resale <br />from any retail or wholesale business source nor received on consignment for the purpose of <br />resale. <br />Sale, sidewalk, means the selling of goods by a business proprietor just outside of the public <br />customer entrance of the proprietor's business where the merchandise sold outside is similar to <br />what is ordinarily sold inside the abutting business and the sales are managed and operated by <br />the abutting business proprietor. <br />School means a building used for the purpose of elementary, middle (junior high) or <br />secondary (high school) education, public or private, which meets all the requirements of <br />compulsory education laws of the state. <br />School (proprietary) means any private business, trade or correspondence operated for a <br />profit or charging tuition that is licensed by the state under Minn. Stats. ch. 141. <br />Screening means earth mounds, berms or ground forms; fences and walls; landscaping (plant <br />materials) or landscaped fixtures (such as timbers); used in combination or singularly, as to block <br />direct visual access to an object throughout the year. Approval by the city council of all site and <br />construction plans prior to development of construction or installation of any screening is <br />required. <br />Secondhand goods store means any store engaged in the business of selling or receiving <br />tangible personal property which has been previously used, rented, owned or leased, but <br />excluding stores which engage in the sale of any used: automobiles; electronic equipment such as <br />stereos, cameras, computers, televisions, audio and video equipment, and similar equipment or <br />appliances; jewelry and precious gems; or guns. Stores which engage in any pawning activity <br />whatsoever fall within the definition of "pawn shop" and shall not be included within the <br />definition of "secondhand goods store." <br />Secretarial and stenographic services means establishments primarily engaged furnishing <br />secretarial, typing, word processing, resume writing, and court reporting services. This category <br />also includes the services of editing, letter writing, and proofreading. <br />Setback yard means the minimum horizontal distance between a structure and street right- <br />of-way, lot line, or other reference point as provided by ordinance. Distances are to be measured <br />perpendicularly from the property line to the most outwardly extended portion of the structure. <br />Sexual conduct means acts of masturbation, homosexuality, sexual intercourse, or physical <br />contact with a person's unclothed genitals, pubic area, buttocks or, if such person is a female, her <br />breast. <br />Sexual excitement means the condition of human male or female genitals when in a state of <br />sexual stimulation or arousal. <br />Shooting gallery means a covered shooting range equipped with targets for practice with <br />firearms. <br />Shopping center means any grouping of two or more principal retail uses whether on a <br />single lot or on abutting lots under multiple or single ownership. <br />Sign means a display, illustration, structure, or device which directs attention to an object, <br />product, place, activity, person, institution, organization, or business.
