CURRENT SITUATION
The Roseville Area Senior Program has been designated the Focal Point of Senior Services for
this community by the Metropolitan Council. Focal Points must provide a minimum range of
services and are identified as lead agencies in the role of coordinating senior services.
SENIOR PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION
NSSC provides financial and volunteer support, community leadership and direction in the
planning and implementation of programs and services. The NSSC Board of Directors is
comprised of six elected officers and six elected Board members plus chairs of the standing
committees. The Board of Directors is elected annually by the "Full Council" a 60- member
group made up of representatives from churches, civic organizations, senior clubs,
municipalities, and agencies with services for seniors. The Full Council meets a minimum of
six times a year as a means of communicating concerns and educating leaders about senior
services and resources.
A tremendous support to the program comes from active volunteers who provide a variety of
assistance. 965 volunteers contribute over 20,000 hours annually.
Currently about 5,000 individuals participate in either the programs or services offered
through the Senior Program. Over 12,000 adults, 55 years and over, reside in the school
district community, representing over 25% of the total community.
EDUCATIONAL. SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The Senior Citizens Program operates a drop -in center which is open Monday through Friday,
8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. This lounge area features refreshments, comfortable seating, two pool
tables, television, current magazines, daily newspapers, and various puzzles and card games. A
library section contains a collection of over 300 books as well as a traveling collection of 50
books from the Ramsey County Library. An average of about 200 adults, 55 years and over,
visit the center daily.
Many of the center's programs provide a combination of educational /social- recreational
components. Programs are planned in conjunction with Community Education's Adult
Enrichment and Roseville Parks and Recreation Department. The following educational
programs are offered during an average month: Continental Breakfast Programs (twice a month
agency services, informational programs, travelogues), Men's Discussion Group (weekly),
Book Club, Religious Study (twice a month), Newcomer's Orientation, Driver's Refresher
Courses, Har Mar Chalk Talks, Women's Breakfast Group, Men's Breakfast Group, Travel Club,
and "Great Decisions" (foreign affairs lectures by local professors this has been an
intergenerational experience including social studies students from the high school), Market
Place Morning Talks, Play Reading Group, Senior Friends (an intergenerational program),
blood pressure testing, health screening, flu immunization clinics.
