Social- recreational programs include: 50 member chorus "North Suburban Senior Chorus
monthly dances, weekly square dances and lessons, current movies, 1/2 day trips, "New
Attitudes" (singles group), 500 cards, bridge, chess club, miniatures club, table games, etc.
Special events drawing large crowds are held throughout the year (i.e. ice cream social, holiday
parties). Horseshoe courts are available near the back of the building. Many older adults
utilize swimming and exercise programs offered through the adult enrichment and aquatics
programs. A large boutique made up of over 100 consignors is open featuring hand crafted
items.
INFORMATION /OUTREACH SERVICES
Information /Referral: Approximately 1,000 telephone requests for information are handled
every month. The Senior Program is one of four sites in Ramsey County to have a Computerized
Senior Resource File. This information system is part of the "First Call for Help" network
which enables us to answer and direct callers to appropriate senior services and information.
Data is updated by "First Call for Help" and includes information on senior services and
resources throughout Ramsey, Dakota and Washington counties. This project is funded through
the Older Americans Act Title III grant through the Minnesota Board on Aging and the
Metropolitan Council.
A resource library is located in the office offering a large selection of information on housing,
health education, community services, medical insurance coverage, consumer protection,
employment opportunities and financial planning.
Golden Retriever Newsletter: The Golden Retriever, a newsletter 20 pages in length, is read by
approximately 3,000 people each month. The Golden Retriever provides current information
on center activities and services, community resources, health education, current legislation,
and issues affecting older adults as well as a broad range of community activities offered through
local municipalities, churches and senior clubs. The cost of an annual subscription is $5.00;
however, free subscriptions are available to those who cannot afford to pay.
Blockworker Outreach Project: The Blockworker Project, based on the "neighbor- helping-
neighbor" concept, utilizes volunteers to visit older residents on their block at least once a
month and provide free written information on community resources, activities and services.
Approximately 530 older adults in Falcon Heights, Roseville, Lauderdale and Little Canada are
visited each month with the help of 50 volunteers. The Community Services Coordinator
coordinates the project by recruiting and training volunteers, canvassing and surveying new
blocks, developing a monthly bulletin that is distributed to all residents and plans monthly
meetings which provide ongoing support and training for volunteers.
Fairview Friends: Fairview Friends are trained peer counselors available to visit older adults
in their home on a one -to -one basis addressing challenges and losses which accompany aging.
The Fairview Friends also host the information desk in the Senior Center, greeting participants
and introducing newcomers to center activities and other seniors.
Support Groups: A seven -week Grief and Loss Group is offered twice a year for those who have
experienced a recent death of a significant person. A Caregiver Support Group meets every
other week. This group offers emotional support and information about resources and services
which can assist the caregiver.
