3: <br /> MINUTES <br /> Solid Waste Commission Meeting <br /> September 9, 1993 <br /> Chair Marty McCleery called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m. <br /> COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: John Brynildson, John Hustad, Terry <br /> Iverson, Laura Kuettel, Marty McCleery, Nancy Misra, Susan Smith, <br /> and Shirley Chenoweth, staff representative. <br /> COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT: Michael Haglund, Lyle Wray, and Sam <br /> Jacobs, council liaison. <br /> OTHERS PRESENT: Jeff Dains, Mayor, City of Lauderdale, and Morrie <br /> Nicholson, block worker /interested citizen. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES: John Brynildson moved and Terry Iverson <br /> seconded the approval of the minutes of the August 12, 1993, <br /> meeting, which included the minutes of the July 8, 1993, meeting. <br /> ADDITION TO AGENDA: Laura Kuettel added as Agenda Item D6 a <br /> discussion of films which can be ordered for showing at the Waste <br /> Reduction Week Open House and on the cable channel. <br /> RESPONSES TO PROPOSED GOALS: Morrie Nicholson attended the <br /> meeting to offer his response to the Commission's stated goals for <br /> the next year, which were circulated to block workers for comment. <br /> He expressed the need for more information in order to evaluate the <br /> goals. For example, the desirability of expanded curbside <br /> collection depends upon what materials are proposed to be collected <br /> and whether there are secondary markets for them. Some recyclables <br /> are worth more separated than in combination (i.e. computer paper <br /> separated from other paper), and some waste is more expensive /labor <br /> intensive to manage, especially hazardous waste. Future newsletters <br /> will address this issue by including more information about the <br /> composition of the waste stream, the availability of markets for <br /> recyclables, and proper preparation of recyclables. <br /> SOLID WASTE REDUCTION WEEK OPEN HOUSE: <br /> 1. Report from Lauderdale. Jeff Dains presented Lauderdale's <br /> preparations for the Falcon Heights /Lauderdale. Open House, which is <br /> to be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on September 30, 1993. Lauderdale <br /> no longer has a solid waste commission, but the city council <br /> actively supports joining Falcon Heights for this event. <br /> Arrangements have been made for the Amoco station on Larpenteur <br /> Avenue to advertise the event on its sign. The Lauderdale city <br /> newsletter is to be distributed the week of the event and will <br /> include information about it. Lauderdale has arranged for Cathi <br /> Lyman -Onkka of Ramsey County to be at the open house with exhibits <br /> on reduction /reuse /recycling; Laura Kuettel will also see if Ramsey <br /> County will provide information on hazardous waste management. <br /> Lauderdale's recycler, Supercycle, will have its truck at the open <br /> house and will have brochures available.
