HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION <br /> Minutes for January 18th 1994 <br /> Commissioners present were: Dave Bowers, Gwen Willems, John Treadwell. <br /> Commissioners absent were: Ed Sheppard <br /> Guests present were: Sue Gehrz and Wayne Groff. <br /> WELCOME TO SUE GEHRZ AS OUR NEW COUNCIL LIAISON!!! <br /> Minutes for the December 22nd meeting were not available for approval. <br /> The Meeting was call -to -order at 7:OOPM <br /> Business: <br /> 1. Election of a new chairperson was proposed. Gwen nominated Dave Bowers and <br /> JohnTreadwell seconded the nomination. All members voted to elect Dave Bowers as the <br /> chairperson and he accepted the nomination. <br /> 2. Discussion on the brochure for the HRC was briefly discussed. Gwen and Dave had <br /> met to brainstorm, some possible issues that they would like to see in the brochure. Any <br /> comments or other ideas are welcomed from the other commissioners. The distribution of <br /> the brochure was discussed. Ideas were: send with the newsletter, direct mailing to the <br /> public, availability at City Hall,.and distribution at local businesses. <br /> 3. HRC budget was discussed. Dave with check with Susan Hoyt as to the amount <br /> available to the Commission and possible additional funds for training and conference <br /> costs. <br /> 4. Gwen would like to attend the International Conference in Canada and would like <br /> support from our HRC in the form of verbal and monetary support. Gwen would like to <br /> know the dollar amount that our commission will fund for this conference, so that she can <br /> get future monetary support from the State Commission. The cost would be approximately <br /> 670.00. <br /> 5. Discussion on whether continuing mediation training for members of the HRC was cost <br /> effective or, whether the City could hire an outside mediation service to handle the cases <br /> that may present themselves. <br /> 6. Discussion on changing the name of the current Human Rights Commission to another <br /> name that may reflect more diversity such as, Human Resource Commission. Future <br /> views on this topic are welcomed by all members. <br /> 7. Sue Gehrz spoke briefly on the directions the City Council is taking to enchance <br /> community involvement,to give a sense of belonging to everyone in the community. <br /> Particularly, involvement and interaction between all age groups. There has been and there <br /> is a continuing effort of the community to develop positive activities for youths who may <br /> not be mainstream, to better involve them with the community. <br /> 8. Brief discussion of involvement jointly of our commission with the other surrounding <br /> communities commissions. <br />
