of the ice cream social. As an informational item, Shoreview reported that it took in up to 30
car seats at its cleanup day, of which five were suitable for refurbishing and reuse.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL: Discussion continued regarding a possible Solid Waste Commission
booth at the ice cream social. Rather than preparing an informational sheet for the event, the
Commission decided to distribute the disposal guide and the calendar showing recycling dates,
both of which have previously been prepared. Ramsey County also publishes information
which could be made available. Mike Haglund and John Brynildson will look into the
availability of "freebies" such as magnets or pens from various industrial sources. Recycling
signs can be available free of charge, and extra recycling bins can be offered for sale. A
drawing may be held to give away a few bins. Bins will also be used to construct the
Commission's display (subject to engineering limitations). Staffing of the booth is to be
determined.
COMMERCIAL RECYCLING SURVEY: Discussion continued of the possibility of
surveying Falcon Heights businesses regarding their recycling practices and needs. The
purpose would be to evaluate the effectiveness of commercial recycling efforts and determine
whether the City can be of assistance in encouraging participation. The City could even
consider instituting mandatory and/or organized recycling for businesses, but would need to
address issues such as the type of products and location of businesses, as well as the cost and
administrative burden to the City. A survey of businesses regarding recycling has previously
been done; Carla Asleson will check the City's records for the results of that survey. Ramsey
County has previously committed to working with businesses on a county-wide basis. The
Commission will ask the County for an update of its activities in that regard.
On the motion of Susan Smith, seconded by Michael Haglund, the meeting was adjourned at
9:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan K. Smith, Secretary
9999- 1779401
3
