MINUTES
FALCON HEIGHTS SOLID WASTE COMMISSION
JULY 14, 1994
Members Present: Barbara Leary, Catherine Mackiewicz, Mary Pat McGinnis, Carla
Asleson (staff representative)
Members Absent: Jeff Alexander, John Brynildson, Michael Haglund, Laura Kuettel,
Marty McCleery, Susan Smith, John Hustad (council representative)
PRESENTATION BY CATHI LYMAN ONKKA, RAMSEY COUNTY
Cathi Lyman -Onkka of the Ramsey County Solid Waste Department, described the
different solid waste curriculums available for use in schools. with the exception of
one high school program, all were geared toward younger children. All programs are
available through the Office of Environmental Assistance if educators are interested
in further details. She also noted that youth are often involved in community waste
related projects, such as community clean -ups and art contests.
As for Commercial /Institutional /Industrial programs in Falcon Heights, Cathi noted that
several businesses had requested County assistance with their recycling programs,
among them Harvest States, Midwest Computer Exchange, and the Northome
Shopping Center. She also stated that a business is most likely to start a recycling
program if the demand comes from the business' customers. Usually, encouragement
from government is not effective unless the business' customer is demanding the
service.
OTHER ITEMS ON THE AGENDA
Due to the lack of members in attendance, approval of the minutes and discussion
regarding the city garage sale were postponed to the September meeting. It was
noted for the minutes that the August meeting had been canceled due to a number
of requests from commissioners.
Re pectfully submitted,
Carla Asleson, Staff Representative
