MINUTES
Falcon Heights Solid Waste Commission
September 8, 1994
Chair Marty McCleery called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
ROLL CALL:
P Jeff Alexander P Marty McCleery
A John Brynildson A Mary Pat McGinnis
A Michael Haglund P Susan Smith
P Laura Kuettel P John Hustad (council liaison)
P Barbara Leary P Carla Asleson (staff representative)
P Catherine Mackiewicz
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the June 2, 1994, meeting were distributed with
the July agenda but were not approved at the July 14, 1994, meeting due to lack of a quorum.
Approval of the June minutes was deferred to the next meeting (October) to give commissioners
an opportunity to review the minutes. The minutes of the meeting of July 14, 1994, will also be
distributed for review and approval at the October meeting.
PROJECT CHILDSAFE/ICE CREAM SOCIAL: The Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Lions
collected 24 car seats for Project Childsafe at the Falcon Heights Ice Cream Social. Four of the
seats appear to be reusable. Approximately twenty -five percent of the people turning in car seats
were not residents of Falcon Heights or Lauderdale. The collection was a success, but it might
have been even more productive if Lauderdale had become involved earlier so that the program
could be publicized in the Lauderdale newsletter and in conjunction with Lauderdale's annual
park event. (Lauderdale's involvement, which was not initially anticipated, arose from the
participation of the Lions.) The Solid Waste Commission booth, also at the Ice Cream Social,
was well received. It may have received more attention in a different location in the park.
Recycling bins and Project Childsafe t -shirts were given away in periodic drawings. For next
year, John Hustad has agreed to serve as a target in the dunk tank, and the Commission will
consider games with a recycling or waste related connection.
GARAGE SALE SURVEY: Responses to the follow -up telephone survey of garage sale
participants was generally positive.
Scheduling. Most residents want the sale to become an annual event. Some wanted
community sales more than once a year, and others wanted sales regularly but less than annually.
A few preferred a multiple -day sale. The Commissioners agreed that multiple days, or two or
more sales a year, would be too disruptive and too demanding in terms of preparation,
advertising, and coordination, while residents can always choose not to participate in alternate
years or if they have scheduling conflicts. The chosen date worked well for most people, and
respondents favored having the sale on the same weekend each year so people can schedule
accordingly.
Advertising. Survey respondents indicated that most people look at the daily papers rather
than the local weekly /monthly papers to learn about the sale. However, the local papers
provided articles and pictures as well as receiving paid advertising. The "Cities 97" radio ad
