purchased by local businesses was not considered to be effective in promoting the garage sale.
The balloons were not visible enough to mark participating blocks and sales. The Commission
may consider investing in permanent signs.
Business Involvement. Local businesses did not perceive a benefit from the community -wide
sale. Several businesses spent money toward a radio ad and did not recoup their investment.
Businesses should be involved earlier in the process, with sufficient time to plan and advertise
"Crazy Daze" or sidewalk sale promotions to coincide with the garage sales. (However, there is
some question whether people who come to the city for garage sales are interested in shopping at
stores on the same day.) Another idea for next year would be to seek donations from businesses
to defray costs of advertising and of preparing and printing maps; in return, the business names
could be listed in advertising and on the maps.
Maps. The maps were useful to those who had them, but many participants didn't know they
were available. Survey respondents thought maps should be distributed to everyone having a
sale. Some found the map hard to read; the Commission will consider developing a customized
map with landmarks and other identifying features rather than using the city street map.
NEWSLETTER ASSIGNMENTS: Newsletter articles are to be submitted at the October
meeting. The following topics were chosen/assigned:
Jeff Alexander: Ramsey County Solid Waste Strategic Planning Commission
Carla Asleson: Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility; Recycling Schedule
Mike Haglund: Items Which Cannot Be Recycled, and Why
Laura Kuettel: Project Childsafe; Fluorescent Lightbulb Disposal
Barbara Leary: Community-Wide Garage Sale
Catherine Mackiewicz: Ideas for Students Interested in Reducing Solid Waste; How Schools Recycle Waste
Marty McCleery: Legislation Relieving Cities of Obligations for Cleanup of Solid Waste Dumps
Mary Pat McGinnis: Composting
Susan Smith: Recycling Block Captains; also will proof and edit articles
The newsletter will thank businesses who donated funds toward the community garage sale.
Miscellaneous recycling/hazardous waste information from Ramsey County can be used as filler
if needed. There was some discussion of including calendar stickers or some other means of
reminding people of recycling collection dates, because there has apparently been confusion even
among block captains.
OCTOBER MEETING: In place of the October meeting, the Commission (and possibly past
members as well) will meet at Ciatti's on OCTOBER 6 at 7:00 p.m. to honor longtime staff
liaison Shirley Chenoweth, who has retired.
On the motion of Susan Smith, seconded by Jeff Alexander, the meeting was adjourned at
8:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
4/
Susan K. Smith, Secretary
2
