He noted the recent amendments to the I-1 District which
requires drive aisles in outdoor storage areas to be a 10 feet in width. The
Administrator indicated that the Deputy Fire Marshal and Fire Chief feel
the 20 foot width is critical to the Fire Department's access ability whether
it be to fight a fire or perform a rescue.
The City Planner noted that in developing the I-I District outdoor storage
standards, a provision was included to provide for 10-foot drive aisles
within the storage areas. The Planner noted in his May 14"'
con•espondence that his point was that there is not a 20-foot fire lane
required in every case or for every situation. The Planner noted that in
parking lots with angled parking, drive aisles are as narrow as 14 feet
depending on the angle of the parking spaces. He asked if the intention of
the recommendation was to provide a fire lane to every portion of a fire.
The Administrator noted that it is the Deputy Fire Marshal's and Fire
Chief s position that the Fire Code supersedes, so the 20 foot fire lanes are
required. The City Attorney agreed that the Fire Code controls.
