MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
August 6, 2015
EAGLE SCOUT
PROJECT
other ways to encourage unlikely participants. Morelan said that sometimes
the schools or social workers contact him and he would try to let them know
about it. Darling asked who else made these scholarships possible. Morelan
said the LCRA funds these scholarships as well as a subsidy to the overall
costs of the program. Morelan also noted that if the City is looking for a
donation for a bench or tree it is advertised in the Le Petit. The Park and Rec
Department thanks the Behles Family for this generous contribution.
Cory Huot appeared before the Commission at the May meeting, and
reported that he is working on his Eagle project and is proposing the concept
of erecting a shade canopy or sun shade over the picnic table area at Veterans
Memorial Park.
This month Huot had a design and budget prepared for the commission. The
design featured a 14 foot square 8 foot tall pergola. The size includes a 2 foot
overhang around the pergola. The budget factored in the cost of using pine,
but Huot also had a more expensive option of cedar in case the commission
thought it would be more beneficial. The pine would cost about $518 and the
Cedar would be about $200 more. Sanders asked how this was designed.
Huot said he used a program on his computer called Solidworks to construct
the image and find the dimensions. Darling asked how the boards are
notched. Huot explained each piece had to be notched to fit into the sides.
Huot noted that he would have to make the notches, but was looking into an
easier way rather than cutting out each board. Darling asked how the beams
are held in place. Huot explained lug nuts hold the roof to the 4 by 4 posts
and the other boards are kept in their notches with screws. Darling asked
who will be a part of his team. Huot said that he would ask family, friends,
and his troop as the date got closer. Maida inquired about the lifetime
warranty Huot mentioned in the budget. Sanders noted this was probably the
standard guarantee Menards has for all of its wood. The boards can be
replaced at any time for free. Morelan said that the cost to replace the lumber
would be minimal compared to the labor necessary to replace it. Sanders
wondered how the picnic table would fit under the pergola. He also asked
how the posts would be set into the ground. Huot responded he would use a
concrete mixture to make a concrete cast in the ground, holding the post in
place. Darling asked if this was a part of the budget and Huot said it was.
Darling asked how Huot was planning to fund the project. Huot said that he
would like to get at least some of the money from the City. He mentioned
that the project was less than he thought it would be and felt that asking the
City for at least half would be fair. Huot said that he would be able to
fundraise the other half of the project if needed. Darling mentioned that she
liked the design. Maida asked if the picnic table was leveled to the Memorial.
He thought that if the pergola wasn't properly placed it would stand out in
the newly designed area. Sanders noted that it would be fairly easy to adjust
the height of the pergola. Huot agreed and mentioned he had chosen the
width based on how the pavers are situated near the Memorial. Maida asked
how Huot decided to go with wood instead of the vinyl. Although the vinyl
2
