MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
August 6, 2015
comes in an easy to put together pack Huot thought it wouldn't fit along the
pavers and decided the wood would be easier to custom design. Vang
mentioned that he had a hard time picturing the pergola and would like to see
some options that showed more design features. Maida asked what size the
boards running along the top of pergola were. Huot said they were 2 by 10.
Maida asked when Huot wanted to have the project done by. Huot said he
would like to have it finished before this winter. Sullivan asked Vang what
kind of design features he would like to see. She also mentioned that seeing
the picnic table would help. Huot said that he could design the ends of the
boards differently or space the boards further or closer apart. Darling asked
Huot how the boards blocked the sun. Huot said that the boards run North
and South to block the sun. Vang noted that if he is the only one who felt
uncomfortable with the design he would go along with it because he was
inexperienced with this type of work. Sullivan noted she liked the aesthetics
of the overhang. Darling liked the simplicity of the design because she
thought it would keep the area open. Yang mentioned he thought staining the
wood would also be a good idea especially if pine is used because it is
greener than the cedar. Huot mentioned the pine would only be green for a
short time and would whiten out. Maida mentioned it would be a good idea
to cut extra boards just in case something happens while he is building or
soon after. Maida wondered if the vinyl would be a better option. Darling
thought wood would look better with the aesthetics of the Memorial. Maida
mentioned that the vinyl is easier to put together and is now made to look
just like wood with grain markings and various colors. Sanders noted that if
Huot used wood he should also choose the more expensive cedar. He also
agreed the wood should be stained. Maida asked how the funding process
with the City Council would work. Morelan said he would put Huot's request
on next week's council agenda. Sanders noted that he felt the design may be
too residential for the Veterans Memorial Park. Morelan suggested
estimating the budget at $1000 because after the expenses like screws and
nails the cost would be closer to $1000. Huot mentioned that he would like to
get at least half of the project funded by the City. Darling made a motion to
ask the City Council to approve Huot's plan and $500 to build the pergola.
Motion seconded by Sullivan.
Motion approved 4-0.
ICE CREAM Vang reported that the weather for the Ice Cream Social had been great and
SOCIAL REPORT attendance was high as well. Morelan mentioned that Culvers estimated
serving 420 Rootbeer Floats. Linda Fahey and Katie McGinnity put the
Social together. Morelan mentioned that the K-9 Unit didn't show up for the
demonstration, but Fahey was probably following up on that. There were
clowns before the Puppet Show and the fire trucks came early to fill the time
the K-9 Demonstration was supposed to be going on. Morelan noted that
Fahey and McGinnity had some ideas about changing the entertainment next
year and said that it would be on next month's agenda to discuss. The
3
