MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
August 6, 2015
OTHER
Commission agreed they would like to involve the preteens more in the
social. Sanders suggested competitions for the older children. Vang noted
that there were a lot of younger children with their parents, but that may have
been due to the Puppet Show as advertised.
Morelan reported that the next Marketplace Morning Talk would be on
Wednesday August 12. The topic is Drug Interactions sponsored by Setzers
Pharmacy.
The Park and Rec Department is sponsoring a bus trip to the Saints game on
September 1st. This event is full.
The LCRA sponsored a trip to the Twins Game for all of the youth baseball
and softball players on July 29. About 70 people attended including
chaperones. This is a great event that the LCRA sponsors for children
playing sports in the community. The children get to see pros or college
athletes play the sport they are working on. The LCRA also sponsors trips to
Timberwolves games and Gopher Volleyball Games.
The Farmers Market has moved to the North Heights Hardware Parking Lot
on Rice Street where they are getting more business and space. The Farmers
Market is every Monday from 2:30 to 6.
Firearm safety begins next week August 10 and runs Monday, Wednesday
and Friday. The program culminates at Bald Eagle Sportsmen Club on
Saturday when the participants practice shooting.
There is still a vacancy 011 the Little Canada Park and Recreation
Commission. The City is taking applications for this position until August
14. Contact Jim Morelan for more information.
Little Canada is hosting part of the Susan G. Komen three day walk. On
August 22 the walkers will be coming through Thunder Bay Park and
Spooner Park where rest stops and refreshments will be located.
The City is preparing the Capital Budget and Jim wanted to let the
Commission know so that they could tell Jim of any Park and Rec
Department concerns they had.
Before the August 12 and 26 City Council meetings there will be workshops.
The workshop on August 12 will be about the City Clerk's Position. The
workshop on August 26 is still tentative but will be confirmed at the August
12 meeting. This meeting will be on Staffing for the Park and Rec
Department. Both will be at 6:00.
A few years ago the holding pond next to Rondeau Park was expanded and
some of the buffer was removed. The Park and Rec Department wants to
replant the buffer to restore the natural trees and shrubs around the pond.
This will also be done with the South pond in Pioneer Park. The City would
like to get this project finished before winter or begin right away next spring.
Sanders asked if Canadian Days had evaluated the Parking situation as
planned. Morelan said the committee used a shuttle bus to alleviate some of
the parking and thought they would let the Commission know if they had any
further issues or concerns.
Chevrolet sponsors some of the baseball activities in Little Canada and The
Parks and Rec Department was presented a check at one of the Twin's
4
