MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRiL 9, 2003
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Anderson.
Ayes (5) LaValle, Anderson, Fahey, Blesener, Montour.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
GOOSP The City Administrator reported that the City has been receiving
CONTROL complaints about the geese population, and the Watershed District has
recommended that the geese be removed from Round Lake in order to
protect the pond plantings adjacent to the lake. The Administrator
reported that three years ago full round-up occurred, two years ago a
partial round-up was conducted, and nothing was done last year. The
Administrator noted that the City has worked with various property
owners on acost-sharing arrangement for the cost of the goose round-up.
These property owners could be approached again to determine their
willingness to share the cost.
Anderson asked whether geese tend to move from area to area or if they
stay in loyal to a particular area. The City Administrator replied that geese
tend to stay in the same area except in the fall when they migrate.
Montour asked who would be conducting the roundup. The Administrator
replied that the City would again contact the University of Minnesota and
the DNR to conduct the roundup. The first step would be to survey the
City to get an estimate of the goose population in the areas they
congregate. Once the population levels are identified, the Council could
make a decision relative to the extent of the roundup.
Mr. Fahey introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESO7_ UTION NO. 2003-4-76 - INS'L'IZUCTING CITY STAFF TO
CONTACT TILE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AND THE DNR
AND A UTIIORIZE THEM TO PROCEED WITH AN ESTIMATE OF
THE GOOSE POPULATION IN THE CITY, WITH THE
UNDERSTANDING THAT ONCE TILE CITY COUNCIL.
