MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 1, 2003
small portion of their back property line. They were definitely not in favor of that idea at all.
He also looked at Edgerton Street and he stated that the ditch is so deep and wide that placement
of anoff-street trail will encroach beyond the road easement. The Director stated that the City
Administrator, the City Engineer and himself took a look at the street to see where the property
lines fell. The west side is the best for an off-street path. The ditch will have to be filled and
the Director would like to see a separation between the roadway and the path.
Larson recommended that this item be tabled until tl:e cost for lowering tlae stoma water
drainage, the street reconstruction, and the traffic signaling system is obtained.
Motion seconded by Sclaabacker.
Motion carried 7- 0.
ICE CREAM Steinert stated that he met with the Director to discuss the possibility of obtaining some kids'
SOCIAL entertainment for the ice cream social on July 31. They talked about having a fire truck on hand
to show the kids and possibly having Maplewood Parks & Recreation do a puppet show.
Steinert commented that he has also called the Ramsey County Sheriff s Canine Unit about
putting on a demonstration for the kids. Larson suggested having a helicopter land. It was
mentioned that the helicopter might interfere with the Canadian Days set up and/or activities on
the ball fields. Schabacker suggested handing out plastic fire hats and candy to the kids. The
Commission decided not to hire a kids' band due to the high cost. The time is set for 6:30 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. and the activities will begin at different times so they don't compete against one
another. The Commission was very happy with these ideas and instructed Steinert to begin
planning the event.
The Director indicated that he has called the Roseville Area High School Jazz Band's director to
let him know about the Commission's decision and also invited him to use our facility for
another concert on his own.
DIRECTOR'S The Director discussed the following issues:
REPORT
^ Three residents of the City have donated some trees to the parks through the program put on
by the Friends of the Parks & Trails...Ginger Sackett Glaser, Jim Broten, and Helen
Nielsen. The Director stated that he would prepare "thank you" letters on behalf of the
Commission.
^ A flyer on an illustrated lecture on the river waterway sponsored by the Friends of the Parks
& Trails was distributed.
• Registration is currently being held for Tennis Lessons, Golf Lessons, Day Camp,
Adventures in the Park, Archery Lessons, and the Firearm Safety Course. Registrations are
also being accepted for the youth trips to the Minnesota Zoo, Cascade Bay Water Park, and
Valleyfair.
^ A WaterFest 2003 flyer was given to the Commission talking about the event scheduled on
Saturday, May 17 at Lake Phalen. The City Administrator has encouraged us to volunteer
our help for that event. Let the Director know within the next couple of days if you would
like to help.
