MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
February 7, 2002
• Benches placed throughout the park will be made of recycled material.
The Director stated that once the bid prices come in, the Commission can decide which
components to keep and which to wait on. Sanders stated that the bid package asks for unit
pricing so that the Commission can evaluate each item.
Schabacker commented that maybe the benches in the park should be the same as the
benches in the Little Canada Road/Rice Street development area. He liked the cement
benches with the City logo. The Director stated that typically, the recycled benches have
been placed in the parks. They are heavy duty and more comfortable than the cement
benches.
Broten recommended that City staff advertise for bids for the Rmideau Park amenities.
Motion seconded by Schabacker.
Motiotc carried 5 - 0.
CONCERTS The Director stated that it is time to discuss what will be done this year with Concerts in the
Park. Last year, the children's concerts seemed to be well attended. However, the other
concerts had low participation. Sackett Glaser commented that concerts may have to be held
weekly all summer long so people become accustomed to knowing that concerts are always
on the same night throughout the summer. The problem is that Little Canada cannot afford
to hold concerts all summer long.
The Commission discussed several ideas for change such as:
• Hold concerts geared towards children only. This could tend to be expensive.
• Check into holding more school band concerts. Suggested contacting White Bear Lake
School District to see if they have interest in holding a concert in the park. However, the
majority of residents attending would probably be non-residents.
• Hold different events other than musical, such as a community ice cream social or car
show.
• Hold one concert during the summer possibly in conjunction with National Night Out in
August. An ice cream social could be an added event at this function. All the focus and
money spent could be on this one event. This may result in more attendance.
Broten asked about the Roseville Area Jazz Band's continued use of the park even if the City
does not sponsor their concert this year. The Director stated that they could continue to use
the park and typically, park fees are waived for school events.
The Director asked the Commission to give more thought to the Concerts in the Park so that
some direction could be given at the next meeting.
dECREATION The Director reported on the following:
REPORT
