MINUTrS
PLANNING COMMISSION
APRIL 11, 2002
is Qwest. They do underground construction for Qwest and pick this
location based on their service area for Qwest.
Knudsen noted that Orius is currently storing a number of vehicles
outdoors. Antonuk repo~~ted that they have some vehicles iu the existing
parking lot for 3250 Spruce Street as well as some on the Frattalone
property off of Spruce Street.
I{eis noted that this area is not one that the City wants to encourage a lot
of outdoor storage. Keis stated that granting a variance in this area causes
him some concern.
Antonuk indicated that he was not asking for more outdoor storage than
the ordinance allows and noted that the amount of outdoor storage
proposed has been sized to meet the ordinance requirements. Antonuk
reported that they intend to pave a portion of the outdoor storage area.
However, they are asking for a variance so they do not have to pave the
entire outdoor storage area. Antonuk reported that his company has track
equipment that would simply tear up a bituminous area. Therefore, they
would like a portion of the outdoor storage yard surfaced with class 5 or
gravel for the track equipment.
Keis asked about the amount of equipment Orius had and whether the
storage area would be adequate. Antonuk reported that the storage ~u ea
would not be large enough for all their equipment. I-Iowever, the
equipment is not all at this site at one time. Orius has locations in
Wisconsin and Missouri. F,quipment is transferred from one location to
another on an as needed basis.
Roycraft asked if Orius was involved in any of the light rail work.
Antonuk reported that they are, but they are not doing all of QwesYs work
associated with light rail.
Antonuk reported that they will have approximately 20 to 30
administrative people located at the Spruce Street site as well as 60 to 80
construction people working from this site.
Keis asked how all the equipment and personnel vehicles will fit on the
site. Antonuk replied that supervisory personnel take vehicles home thus
reducing the number of vehicles that will be parked on the property.
Keis asked how many large vehicles would be stored on the property on
nights and weekends. Antonuk reported that 30 to 40 large vehicles would
be stored. Keis asked if the outdoor storage area was large enough to hold
these vehicles and equipment. Antonuk replied that the outdoor storage
-5-
