MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
May 5, 2016
entrance to spruce things up a little for the time being. The Director
thought that would be a good idea and said he would talk to Gagne about
it.

The Recreation Supervisor reported the Ice Cream Social is coming up
soon. The date is set for Thursday, July 28th from 6 – 8pm. She explained
she had contacted the Roseville High School Jazz Band and the Director
was excited for the event, but was unsure if the band would be able to
perform. He indicated that their summer program would wrap up the week
before the Ice Cream Social and the students may not be in town after. He
told the Recreation Supervisor he would get back to her with an answer
soon. The Recreation Supervisor also contacted several magicians and
explained the 45 minute rate would be between $350 and $750 depending
on the magician. She explained she was reviewing YouTube videos of the
magicians to try and narrow it down. The Recreation Supervisor also
suggested hosting a photo booth at the event. She explained a booth could
be rented and then the company would run the booth. This would cost
between $300 and $400. The Recreation Supervisor also suggested having
the Little Canada Recreation Association (LCRA) sponsor the event. This
would provide funding. Sullivan liked the photo booth idea. Darling
questioned asking the LCRA to fund the event. The Recreation Supervisor
explained their mission is to serve the youth of Little Canada and this
would be a good way to follow that. The Recreation Supervisor asked if
she should pursue the photo booth, magician, jazz band, and firetrucks for
the event. Schletty explained the event seemed like something people
would only stop at for a few minutes, but the jazz band could keep people
at the social for a longer period of time. Schletty also inquired about the
length of the program. The Director explained in the past the event was
from 6:30 – 8:00 and each activity lasted 30 minutes. This year, with the
new program the Director thought two hours would be needed. The
Recreation Supervisor also assured Schletty that people had stayed
throughout the event in the past. Chu asked how many residents attended
the social. The Director reported attendance was typically around 125
people. Chu asked if the magicians would walk around or perform a show.
The Recreation Supervisor explained the magicians would perform a
show. Chu also suggested trying to make the event a way to bring out
groups of people that haven’t participated in events like these before. A
couple of examples Chu gave was having youth present spoken word or a
song. Horwath thought another idea could be bringing in inflatables for the
children, but noted this could be expensive. Chair Miller asked the
Recreation Supervisor if she could update the Commission over email.
The Recreation Supervisor explained she would continue to look into the
jazz band, magicians, and photo booth and conduct a vote over email. Chu
asked how the event was advertised. The Director explained it is
advertised in the Canadian Days event schedule, the Le Petit, on the
website, and on channel 16. Ray asked how many years the Social had
ICE CREAM
SOCIAL
PROGRAM
