MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
May 5, 2016
PARKS AND
RECREATION
MISSION
STATEMENT
been running. The Director thought about 10 years. Ray suggested putting
events like this on more often. Chu agreed and thought a community
barbeque would be nice. Chair Miller asked if the magicians didn’t work
out, what the back-up plan would be. The Recreation Supervisor explained
that if the Commission couldn’t obtain the funds from the LCRA, they
would go back to the puppet wagon. Chair Miller thought if funding was
an issue he would like to see the photo booth over the magician. Others
agreed explaining it was something people could remember the event by.

Chair Miller explained the Mission Statement has been a coordinated
process to write a vision explaining what the Parks and Recreation
Commission’s job would be over the next several years. He continued the
City staff, Council, LCRA, and the Commission had been involved in the
visioning process and the final touches were being added before the
statement would be sent to the Council and advertised on the City website.
Chair Miller explained that right now the Commission was looking at how
similar the 2009 Parks Plan was compared to the new mission statement.
He noted the Plan had been mailed to each of the Commission members,
and commented the Plan was well put together and also aligned very
closely with the mission statement. Chair Miller explained he would talk
to Councilman Fischer about the final details of the mission statement and
the Commission could recommend a final draft to the Council at the next
meeting. Darling explained she wanted the mission statement to be easily
found on the website. She also thought it would be good to have the Park
Plan more visible on the website, although she noted it needed to be
updated. The Director explained the Park Plan could be made easier to
find, but was part of the Comprehensive Plan which would be updated
next in 2018. Chair Miller suggested including more updated facts on the
website. Chu asked if the mission statement had been made yet and what
still needed to be done. Chair Miller explained there was a mission
statement and the next step would be to have the Commission recommend
it to the Council for approval. Chair Miller said he would send Chu the
mission statement so she could review it.

Darling reminded the Commission of last month’s discussion with the
LCRA president, Jon Joriman, on the organization’s ideas. Joriman had
presented a list of projects LCRA members had thought of and which the
organization may be willing to help support financially. Darling asked if
the Commission could choose one or two projects to get started on. The
Director agreed that would be a good process. Darling suggested looking
into resurfacing Gilbertson Field, upgrading the dugouts at Pioneer Park,
putting motion lights up at the Skate Park, or adding a gaga ball court.
Chair Miller asked if the Council or the Commission should ask the LCRA
for funding if required. The Director explained the Council would ask the
LCRA. Chair Miller noted that the motion lights for the skate park might
be a good project. The Director explained there had been noise issues in
FUTURE
PROJECTS
DISCUSSION
FOR
COLLAB-
ORATION
WITH LCRA
