MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 10, 2017
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Torkelson.
Ayes (5).
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
Keis read the resolution in its entirety.
UPDATE FOR The Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager reported that Staff
PICKLE BALL has been researching how to add picicleball courts and getting input from
OPTIONS other cities about their experiences. He explained that Staff came up with
four options to discuss with the Parks & Recreation Commission, and their
recommendation was option D, to resurface the existing tennis courts at
Spooner Park with dual purpose striping for both tennis and picicleball,
and add a strap so the net height is adjustable. He noted that there is a
bank of five cottonwood trees next to the courts that drop debris on the
courts which is prematurely eroding the court surface. He reported that
the Parks & Recreation Commission agreed that these trees should be
removed.
McGraw asked if picicleball was that popular. The Manager stated that all
but one city he talked to said that they now have dedicated picicleball
courts. The City Manager stated that due to the smaller size of our tennis
courts, they are not big enough for more than two picicleball courts.
Montour stated that maybe the City should wait on these projects also until
after the Parks Master Plan is completed. The City Administrator stated
that there would not be any additional money spent since the tennis courts
were budgeted to be resurfaced this year anyway, and the Parks &
Recreation Commission's recommendation is to dual stripe the existing
tennis courts. Fischer stated this is a good way for a low price to see how
popular picicleball courts will be in Little Canada. The Manager stated
that Staff is looking into doing some organized activities and classes for
picicleball.
Keis introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOL UTION NO. 2017-5-81—APPROVING THE PARKS &
RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION TO
RESURFACE AND DUAL STRIPE THE EXISTING TENNIS
COURTS FOR BOTH TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL, AND REMOVE
THE FIVE COTTONWOOD TREES ON THE SOUTHWEST
CORNER OF THE COURT
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by McGraw.
Ayes (5).
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
