MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
March 2, 2017

The Recreation Supervisor reported the annual garage sale would be on
May 18th, 19th, 20th. She explained the registration will be free this year to
encourage additional participants. The Recreation Supervisor noted
registration would still be required in order to create a map for the event
and signs would cost $5.00, but the sign could be returned after the event
and the money would be refunded.

The City Administrator reported staff is looking for more information
from the Commission regarding the pickleball court project that was
included on the prioritization list last year. He explained staff would like
to know if the Commission wants to retrofit an existing tennis court or
create a new pickleball court. The City Administrator explained the
disadvantage to retrofitting an existing tennis court is that pickleball courts
are much smaller, and the ball often rolls away from the court which
disrupts the game on a tennis court. The Recreation Supervisor reported
she had done some research and other cities have retrofitted tennis courts
into pickleball courts. She explained that four pickleball courts can fit on
one tennis court. The City Administrator explained a court could also be
lined for both tennis and pickleball and players can setup the nets for the
game they would like to play. The Recreation Supervisor noted there is
interest for pickleball in Little Canada, as residents have discussed this
idea with her. Horwath mentioned the game is gaining in popularity.
Darling asked if instead of making four pickleball courts out of one tennis
court, the City could just make two pickleball courts to test the usage. The
City Administrator explained the tennis courts were scheduled to be
resurfaced and re-lined this year, and creating four pickleball courts at that
time would be the most efficient method.

Ray asked if there was any information on the usage of the tennis courts in
Pioneer and Spooner Parks. Councilman Fischer stated he frequents both
parks and people often play tennis at both. He explained there is a lot of
activity and traffic at Pioneer Park. Councilman Fischer stated the
basketball court gets more usage then the tennis court at Pioneer Park, but
there are still quite a few who play tennis there. He continued, he also
sees quite a few tennis players at Spooner Park, but not as many as
Pioneer Park. Horwath mentioned that taking away one opportunity to
provide another concerned him because the opportunity already available
was seeing usage. Ray asked if Councilman Fischer sees the two courts at
each park being used at the same time. Councilman Fischer stated he sees
the two tennis courts at Pioneer Park being used at the same time more
frequently than the two tennis courts at Spooner Park. He explained he
has seen both courts being used at the same time at Spooner Park only a
handful of times. Councilman Fischer explained the Commission seemed
to be leaning towards retrofitting one of the Spooner Park tennis courts to
2017 LITTLE
CANADA
GARAGE SALE
PICKLEBALL
COURT PROJECT
