MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
March 2, 2017
four pickleball courts. The Commission agreed, noting Spooner Park was
a quieter space, which may be more apt for an older crowd. It was
mentioned that the LCRA could hold a pickleball tournament during
Canadian Days. The City Administrator asked if the Commission wanted
the pickleball courts to be dual purpose or solely for pickelball. The
Commission agreed it would be best to have a dedicated space for
pickleball, so residents wouldn’t have to adjust or switch the nets.
Sullivan suggested hosting a pickleball event during the Ice Cream Social.

The City Administrator reported there is a street reconstruction project
proposed for Lake Shore Avenue and East Rose Place from Lake Street to
Jackson Street. He explained there is a requirement to accommodate
runoff in this area through the use of rain gardens. The City Administrator
stated the City typically asks residents for permission to put rain gardens
in the boulevard of their property, but due to limited resident interest, the
City Engineer is proposing putting the rain garden at the east end of
Nadeau Wildlife Park, and incorporating it with the proposed Savage Lake
Public Access. He reasoned the reconstruction project was already out for
bid, and since the public access was still unclear, the best option was to
put the infiltration basin at the east end of the park and make it larger than
shown to accommodate the requirement. Schletty asked how the park
would be impacted. The City Administrator explained the horseshoe pit
would need to be moved. Chair Miller agreed having the rain garden in
the park would be the best option to allow for potential access to West
Savage Lake. The City Administrator stated the infiltration basin would
have to be larger than what is shown if only one was constructed. Ray
made a motion to recommend the Council approve one larger
infiltration basin at the east end of Nadeau Park. Darling seconded
the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

The City Administrator stated there were 41 applicants for the Parks and
Recreation position, and using a point system, it was narrowed down to 14
candidates who each received a phone interview. He explained staff then
narrowed it down to six applicants who will have in-person interviews on
Tuesday, March 7th. He stated that if Commission members would like to
participate in the interviews, they will need to come for the entire session
in order to be involved in any candidate discussions. The City
Administrator stated staff would be putting together information packets
including applications, resumes, phone interview summaries, and written
question answers. Chair Miller asked if the number of applicants was
typical. The City Administrator noted it was rather high, and mentioned
applicants had applied under both job titles which was interesting.

REVIEW
INTERVIEW
PROCESS
INFILTRATION
PRACTICES:
NADEAU
WILDLIFE
PARK SAVAGE
LAKE ACCESS
