4
Spooner Park Improvements; City of Little Canada As previously noted, the play area sits at a lower
elevation from the existing parking lot and shelter.
The lower elevation allows for relatively good visibility
of the play area from the shelter. The existing areas
currently utilize sand for the play surface, which does
not meet ADA standards for accessibility. In addition,
the play areas do have topographical change from
one end to the other, which results in a general
migration of sand to the southwest side of the areas
and loss of sand during rain events. In addition the
northeast end of the smaller play area does not
currently meet ADA grades.

Some general options are being considered for the
location/reconfiguration of the play areas. The first is
to leave the play areas in their current location and
join them together to create one contiguous area.
Two options for the connection are shown in Exhibit 2a
and 2b. The first option would be the least expensive,
but does not address ADA issues. The second option
requires replacement of the majority of the play area
and would require retaining walls on the north side to
address ADA issues.

Another option is shown in Exhibit 2c. In this option the larger play area to the south
that meets ADA requirements is left in place and the north play area is removed. A new
play area is added in between the existing south play area and trail. This would allow
for a separation between the two play areas as currently exists.

The final option is to construct an entirely new play area in the location of the existing
play area or a new location. No exhibit is provided because the shape can be
determined based on the play area equipment chosen.

If the play areas are left in their current location and combined by removing the grassy
area between them the following items to note have been identified:
