5
Spooner Park Improvements; City of Little Canada Benefits:
· Lowest Cost
· Lowest impact to surrounding area and trees

Negative Aspects:
· Does not allow for revision of the overall slope of the play areas and continued loss
of play surface material
· If north play area is left in place it does not meet ADA requirements.
· Overall shape will remain largely the same and any play equipment modifications
will need to occur within the existing area
· The unique shape creates relatively high unusable space for clear zone requirements
· Loss of a minimum of two trees as noted in the picture

If a new play area is totally reconstructed in the current area or a new area the following
items to note have been identified:

Benefits:
· Slope issues can be addressed by grading a new pad area
· Different shape can be utilized and designed around the current play features
proposed or additional features may be utilized based on a different footprint
· Potential to move play area closer to the shelter

Negative Aspects:
· Higher cost
· Potential need to relocate other park features such as the sand volleyball court
if new location is chosen.

Currently, there are only a few ADA accessible surfaces to utilize within the play area.
Listed from least expensive to most expensive they are engineered wood fiber (similar
to wood mulch), shredded rubber, rubber mat/tile, and a poured in place rubber. The
price range is from $3.00 for the wood fiber to $15.00 per square foot for the poured in
place rubber. For maintenance of the surface the Public Works Staff will be able to add
or adjust the engineered wood fiber material. The poured-in place rubber surface will
need repairs and/or maintenance every ten years. This work will not be able to be
completed by Public Works and will increase the life cycle costs.
