STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Bryce Shearen, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager

DATE: November 30, 2018

RE: Programming History

At the last Parks & Recreation Commission meeting, the Commission asked to look at
programming. Staff has put together a PowerPoint presentation that goes over approximately the
last 10 years of program offerings for both youth, adult, and family activities. Before talking
about future offerings, staff felt that it was important for the Commission to see data from
approximately the past 10 years.

Below the Parks & Recreation Program Supervisor and Program Coordinator provided additional
information on the programs.
Youth Programs
Softball
The softball program has slowly been losing participants mainly due to the fact that fastpitch
softball has taken over. Girls play fastpitch on the school teams and then move onto club level of
play with a fastptich association during the summer months.
Floor Hockey
We play floor hockey with the City of Maplewood, the kids sign up through us and we send the
information over to Maplewood. They run the league at one of their local schools.
Volleyball
Volleyball is still a very popular sport, we have had 2-3 teams in the two age groups for the past
few years. We play in the City of Maplewood’s volleyball league. Just recently they no longer
have a 7-9 grade league due to not enough participants.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics continues to be a popular activity for both young boys and girls. We have 2 classes
per year, one in the fall and another in the winter.
Fire Arm Safety
Fire arm safety continues to be a class that kids and adults take. In the past we held classes that
ran for 3 days with a field shoot on the fourth day at a local gun club.
