MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
March 6, 2008
facility. Morelan said it was not a feasible undertaking because of the elevation of the sewer
lines.
Maida made a motion for the City to negotiate for the purchase of land from St. John's Church
south of the hockey rink, move the pleasure skating rink to that location, and to do any
necessary or required repair work to the warming house. Steinert seconded the motion. Motion
carried 6-0.
Fahey made a motion to locate the skate board park in the current pleasure skating rink area.
Motion was seconded by Steinwall. Motion carried 6-0.
Maida inquired if there were any grants available if additional funding would be necessary for
completion of the skate park. Sanders stated that there was a grant available called the Tony
Hawks Skate Board Grant that was for $ 10,000. Morelan thought we will pursue that grant.
Steinert was confident that if the total cost of the skate park hovered around $100,000 that the
LCRA would fund the total project. All the commissioners felt that the city council members
were in favor of the skate park and would hopefully support additional funding if necessary.
Morelan stated there was new lighting scheduled for the hockey rink. Sanders stated that two
new poles would be added on opposite corners of the rink.
TRAILS Sande
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
s commented on his list of seven trail projects that were yet to be completed;
Centerville Road/County Road D
Power Line Trail/Payne Avenue to Pioneer Park
Waterworks Trail/Railroad Crossing
Rice Street "Trail
North/South Connection -Middle School to Troutbrook
Waterworks Trail/Little Canada Road to Sextant
Sunset Court/Turnquist Wetland Trail and Boardwalk
Some trails needed property owner's approval, some required tie-ins with street repair projects,
some were very expensive projects, and some just needed to be further reviewed. Morelan
stated that two other trail projects should to be added to the list:
8) 35E Pedestrian Crossing
9) Westwind Trail link down Country Drive to South Owasso Blvd.
Morelan stated the city council would like a priority listing of these trails, identifying and
focusing on the need of each trail and an action plan. Davis suggested the commissioners
prioritize the trails with either a short term or long term time line for the next meeting in April.
Fahey reminded all that Trail #1 and #4 depended on street reconstruction projects timing.
Maida asked if Sanders could make a new trail map showing existing and proposed trails in
different colors. Sanders agreed he could do that.
ARBOR DAY Morelan stated that Arbor Day is April 25`", but the celebration has been moved up one week to
April 18`".
