2

3. Command Response Vehicles are assigned to assure that specific employees are able to respond
to emergency and non-emergency fire department business and incidents without delay. These
individuals are an integral component to the response, control, mitigation, and management of the
Fire Department and are required to be able to immediately respond when requested. Reasonable
use of a response vehicle by an employee is acceptable provided the employee is immediately
available to respond to an emergency incident and is within a 15-minute response time from the
City of Little Canada. Examples of acceptable non-incident uses are running general errands to
the supermarket, pharmacy or bank, etc. or travel to Fire Department training or conferences.
Unacceptable uses include, but are not limited to parking the vehicle at bars, nightclubs, etc.,
when not on official fire department business.

4. Individuals assigned the use of a Command Response Vehicle are responsible for the care,
appropriate use, and the public image reflected by the use of that vehicle. Careless driving,
following too closely, failure to signal, failure to yield, braking suddenly and expressing anger to
another motorist are examples of behavior that reflects poorly and negatively on the fire
department. Members should remember that they are always under the close scrutiny by the
public when operating a fire department vehicle.

5. Individuals assigned the use of a Command Response Vehicle must comply will all traffic laws
and are responsible for any driving violations/fines that result from their driving. The driver and
any passengers shall use a seat belt restraining system at all times when the vehicle is in motion.

6. Individuals assigned the use of a Command Response Vehicle are strictly prohibited from
operating a fire department vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, and are likewise
prohibited from using prescription or over the counter medication which may impair their ability
to safely operate a motor vehicle.

7. All Command Response Vehicle maintenance costs are the responsibility of the Fire Department.
Vehicle mileage and maintenance will be logged and evaluated on a regular basis to help
determine vehicle performance and use and will aid in the vehicle replacement schedule.

8. Operators of an assigned Response Vehicle shall follow all applicable departmental standards as
they relate to emergency vehicle operation.

Use of a Fire Department Command Response Vehicle requires the adherence to all the above standards.
