MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 25, 2001
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Anderson.
Ayes (5) Scalze, Anderson, LaValle, Fahey, Montour.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
POTENTIAL Council reviewed the Public Works Director's report relative to potential
PUBLIC Public Works garage sites. Scalze asked at what point the Council would
WORKS make a decision as to whether or not a new Public Works garage would be
SITES constructed.
Fahey noted that $150,000 in life safety improvements are needed to the
existing Public Works garage. He further noted the need fora 3,000 square
foot addition to the garage in order to meet future needs. Fahey stated that his
position is that the City needs to acquire land and construct a new Public
Works garage facility.
Scalze felt there was a big difference between putting $150,000 in
improvements into the existing City garage and constructing a $1 million new
Public Works garage.
Fahey pointed out the City needs to plan for the future, and suggested that the
action at this point would be to acquire land for the future development of a
new Public Works garage. He indicated that he did not favor Site #1, The
Maryhouse property.
LaValle suggested that the City liquidate some of its existing holdings before it
acquires any additional property. Fahey indicated that there are few
undeveloped sites in the City, and if a site is not acquired now, there may not
be any available in the future.
Scalze pointed out that the City is close to being fully developed, and she
questioned the need for a new Public Works garage. Fahey suggested that it
was not practical to put $150,000 of improvements into a $300,000 building.
LaValle felt a new Public Works garage was along-range plan, and suggested
that the Council does not need to move forward on the purchase of land this
evening.
The City Administrator indicated that the proposal is not to immediately build
anew Public Works garage. However, if the City does not acquire land for the
long-term, there may be no land left available. The Administrator noted that
Sites #2 and #3 are currently on the market.
