MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 28, 2001
each year. About half of thaC amount comes from charitable gambling revenue
from their pull tab sites. The other half comes from button sales, liquor sales
revenues, and the 5-K race. Nelson reported that they also have additional
needs in that there are tents Chat need to be replaced and other equipment and
park improvement needs.
Fahey indicated that he had difficulty with reducing gambling sessions
allocated to Millenium Charity Plus. He noted that this is a City-based
organization that was instrumental in funding the purchase of land for Pioneer
Park as well as the Little Canada Fire Station. Milleniwn Charity Plus is also
an employer in the City and reducing their gambling sessions would affect
people's jobs. Fahey stated that from his perspective tine organization that is at
risk is Lake Owasso. Fahey suggested that the issue be tabled for a month so
that additional research could be done on the gross receipts piece as well as a
look taken at all the options. Fahey suggested Chat perhaps Millenium Charity
Plus could have sessions reduced until such time as Lake Owasso's gambling
license is up for renewal. Fahey pointed out that Millenium Charity Plus could
not be present this evening, and he would like to here from this charity.
LaValle asked if Canadian Days would furnish a copy of their budgets and
financial statements for the past three years. LaValle suggested that another
option to consider would be that the four charities currently operating at the
bingo hall would provide funding for Canadian Days.
Scalze pointed out that 100% of the charitable gambling revenue generated by
Canadian Days is spenC within Little Canada. The same is true for the Little
Canada Historical Society. Scalze stated that she was not sure this was true for
Millenium Charity Plus, North Suburban Youth, or Lake Owasso. While
Millenium Charity Plus might be a City-based organization, Scalze was not
sure 100% of their net profit benefited the citizens of Little Canada.
LaValle pointed ouC the charities operating at Che Little Canada Bingo Hall all
work well together and the hall is running well. LaValle felt that there was no
reason to change at this point if the other charities will agree to more actively
support Canadian Days. LaValle also stated that it was his understanding that
once the Historical Society pays off their debt, they may not be interested in
continuing to operate at the bingo halt.
Jean Donovan, Little Canada Historical Society, indicated that they have not
made a decision on whether or not they will continue in charitable gambling
once their building debt is repaid. Donovan stated that they may continue to
operate for a period of time afterward in order to build up some funds for some
other expenditures.
