MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JANUARY 5, 2000
active and solicit interest from 9 and ] 0 year olds. If there is not enough
interest to form a team, that is fine. However, this age group should not be
excluded because the City does not offer them the opportunity to play.
Fahey suggested that by not offering a 10 and under team, the City would
lose these players to other programs.
Fahey suggested that a flyer be sent out soliciting interest in a 10 and
under fastpitch team. He further suggested that depending on the level of
interest, the City could either forma 10 and under team or, if not enough 9
and 10 year olds registered, to allow that age group to play on a 12 and
under "C" team.
Scalze agreed, and suggested that it should be up to the kids and their
parents as to whether or not they want to play fastpitch. Providing the
opportunity will leave the decision in their hands. Because the City offers
slowpitch for this age group should not be a reason not to offer fastpitch.
Scalze felt the City needed to build on its programs rather than sending
kids to other programs.
The Director pointed out that the fact that the City has a competing
slowpitch program is only one factor that was taken into consideration.
The Director indicated that no other cities are offering fastpitch; this
program is being run by associations. The Director also indicated that the
main factor is that there has been no demand from residents fora 10 and
under fastpitch program.
Scalze felt that demand comes when a program is being built. Scalze felt
that participation in fastpitch will continue to grow.
Fahey indicated that his concern is that the City does not know what the
demand is until it asks. Therefore, he supported soliciting interest in a 10
and under league.
Morelan suggested that a supplemental flyer be distributed soliciting
interest in a 10 and under team. Fahey agreed, but pointed out that 10 year
olds should still be offered the opportunity to try out for a higher team if
they so choose. However, 9 year olds would not.
Scalze suggested that solicitation extend to neighboring communities that
do not offer this activity. The Director indicated that in addition to the
schools that serve Little Canada, flyers were routinely distributed to St.
Jerome's School for fastpitch.
10
