MINUTES <br />Parks & Recreation Commission <br />Apri16, 2000 <br />related to parks and recreation as follows: <br />^ Finalize Jackson Street park development. <br />Explore cooperative agreement with St. John's regarding community space. <br />^ Complete placement of parks and recreation registration information on computer. <br />Develop concept plan for Round Lake area. <br />^ Construct pedestrian walkway over I35E. <br />Cablecast Parks and Recreation Conunission meetings. <br />Anderson stated that it was evident by the voting that parks and recreation was important to <br />those present. He also commented that he felt improved communication needed to occur <br />between the Mayor, City Council, and the Parks & Recreation Conunission. The Director <br />stated that meetings are held periodically with the Mayor and Council to discuss parks and <br />recreation issues. Anderson felt that the Council would like the Commission to be more <br />proactive as far as thinking of parks and recreation development ideas. <br />Anderson asked Commission members to think of ideas for improved communication with <br />the Council for discussion at the next meeting. He also asked them to present ideas for new <br />parks and recreation projects for consideration at the next meeting. He encouraged them to <br />use their creativity. Every idea is worthwhile, even if it ends up being turned down. <br />Anderson asked the Director to have Sanders present a sketch of the Round Lake area to be <br />developed showing the road layout for the next meeting. <br />JACKSON Anderson stated that the City has received a request from neighbors in the Jackson Street/ <br />PARK Little Canada Road area to play a role in the park design and also in naming the park. The <br />Director felt that a neighborhood meeting should be held to get input on park design. <br />However, he felt that the City should develop a concept for the park to present to the <br />neighbors for their consideration. The Director stated that a contest could be held to name <br />the park like what was done with Pioneer Park. <br />Schabacker expressed concern with the number of trees removed from the construction site. <br />The Director stated that he would talk to the City Administrator about his concern. <br />Schabacker stated that it would have been nice to know about how many trees were being <br />removed before it actually happened. <br />Schabacker suggested adding exercise stations in the park. Sackett Glaser felt that the park <br />needs a playground for children. I7ie Director stated that a half basketball court would be <br />nice. <br />Anderson asked Commission members to bring Jackson park ideas with them to the next <br />meeting for discussion, with the idea of holding a neighborhood meeting in June. <br />The Director commented that park access in the form of a trail is needed from Jackson Street <br />and from the Provinces Apartments. He stated that he met with representatives of the <br />Provinces and they seemed to be open to discussions on the installation of a trail connection <br />to their property. <br />Page 2 of 4 <br />
