MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
September 7, 2000
Sackett Glaser recommended approving the proposed budget for Fund 400 as stated above.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 7 - 0.
CANADIAN Anderson stated that he received a complaint regarding trash blowing around at Spooner Park
DAYS during Canadian Days. The City Administrator stated that he would pass this information on
to the Parkkeeper.
TRAIL The City Administrator stated that at the goal setting session earlier this year, completing the
SYSTEM City's trail system was chosen as a priority for the City. City staff has been working on
putting a list together of the missing segments, showing the affected property owners.
However, the list is not quite complete. He recommended that this issue be tabled until a
future meeting.
NAMING The Director stated that he had received some suggestions for naming the new parks located
PARKS on Jackson Street and at Round Lake. He felt that a park naming policy should be
established. When Pioneer Park was named, public input was sought. The City received
approxiu~ately 200 name suggestions for that park. The Commission then reviewed the
suggestions and found that 12 people wanted the park to be named Pioneer. The
Commission recommended that name to the Council who gave final approval.
Anderson felt that the Commission should have the discretion to accept or reject any name
suggestions made. He did not feel the Commission should be forced to recommend a name
based on the highest number of suggestions received.
Sackett Glaser recommended that the City establish the following procedure for rcanzing
parks within the City:
1. Solicit public input by publicizing an ad in the local newspaper, the City newsletter
and on cable television, giving the public approximately two months to submit their
name suggestions to the City.
2. At the following Commission meeting, the Commission will narrow the list of
suggestions down to five (5) r:ames.
3. At the subsequent Commission meeting, the public will be invited for comments on
the five names selected. If new names are presented to tke Conunission at this
meeting, tlae Commission can consider them. The Commission has the discretion
to acceptor reject any park name received.
4. The Commission would then submit their reconzrnendatiorz to the City Council for
final approval.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 7 - 0.
