MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
August 7, 2008
Fahey asked if the Little Canada fire h•uck was utilized much for this event. Morelan stated that
the fire truck was well attended.
SKATEBOARD Morelan reported that the Skateboard Park has been open for the last two weeks. There is a
PARK Grand Opening scheduled for Wednesday, August 27 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The President
of the Little Canada Recreation Association will be in attendance as that organization funded the
Skateboard Park. The program for the Grand Opening will be discussed at next week's meeting
of the Recreation Association. A professional skateboarder, Charlie Thomas, will give a
demonstration on skateboarding and give a talk on skateboarding safety.
Morelan continued by saying there will also be a ribbon cutting ceremony, prizes and
refreshments served. It will be called the Fire Barns Skate Park and fliers and posters will be
made and distributed. He recommended the commissioners be there if possible. He stated there
have been discussions on having a skateboard park since 2004 and the Rec Assn. saw a need for
an activity associated with skate boarding. Back in 2004 the cost was estimated at $50,000.
The actual cost this year was over $125,000 to have it constructed.
RECON- Morelan went on to say the pleasure skating rink is proposed at the south end of the hockey
FIGURATION rink. Preliminary discussions with St. John's Church seem to be that they will be in agreement
OF OFH RINK with that location but we must contact St. Paul Water Department for an easement. Jim doesn't
foresee any problems with that easement so the skateboard park equipment should not have to
be removed to put the pleasure ice skating rink on the skateboard park area.
SIDEWALK Sanders stated that the DNR grants are on a cycle that begins after the first of the year.
PLAN/TRAIL He suggested we discuss these grants again at the December meeting. Most of the grants are
SYSTEM on a yearly cycle, with a few on a two year cycle. Davis asked if we have submitted for these
grants before. Sanders said we have applied and we were successful in receiving a DNR grant
for the Waterworks Trail.
Sanders commented that he is working on the map of trail priorities.
LIGHTING Morelan stated that the lighting projects were scheduled to start on Monday with the Spooner
PROJECTS Park tennis court lighting. Once that is completed they will then do the lighting at the hockey
rinks.
BOARDWALK Sanders reported that Morelan and he had looked at the Boardwalk progress. The progress had
been delayed because of a spring of water that was located coming out of the hillside. They
have made some changes with the boarkwalk construction. It is scheduled to be completed by
the first part of September.
OTHER Morelan handed out a flier for the Wednesday, August 13, Market Place Morning Talks. The
scheduled program this month is about emergency preparedness. The Bingo Hall donates the
space for these talks, usually held on the second Wednesday of each month. There are usually
between 20 and 30 people, mostly seniors, who attend these morning talks.
