As the City looked to replace the existing restroom
and shower facility at East Medicine Lake Park, ISG developed a plan that has helped
revitalize and enhance this public gathering space for residents and visitors alike. The
City wanted to make wide-scale park improvements while engaging the public in the
decision making process. ISG generated and refined plans for park improvements
through active collaboration, an initial visioning session, and review meetings. The City
wanted space for additional programming events, sections that appeal to adults and
children, and improved safety and accessibility. These goals drove project designs, which
provide a flexible environment that meets the needs of many community members.
Project Highlights
A primary feature of the project was the addition of a picnic shelter building. Capable
of seating approximately 90-110 individuals, the shelter includes outdoor grills,
Adirondack chairs, a kitchen, storage space, vestibule, restroom, and showers. Metal
paneling, wood siding, an exposed structure, and a hollow metal door establishes
an industrial character, which is complimented with warm colors, preservation of
preexisting trees, and sloped lawn area. Another flexible use space is the central plaza,
which can be used for outdoor learning, events, weddings, and picnicking.
The Park also contains two play areas. The first is 5,150 sq. ft. space for children ages
5 to 12, and a smaller, 1,000 sq. ft. playground is dedicated to children ages 2 through
5. For older residents and visitors, there are 11 bike racks, a canoe and kayak storage
area, and a designated mocking area with permanent poles and hammock. Light
bollards, parental seating adjacent to the children’s area, and unobstructed views
increase safety. With ADA restrooms, picnic tables, showers, and a sink, everyone can
enjoy the park without worry.
By embracing the chance to evaluate opportunities across East Medicine Lake Park, the
City of Plymouth has the foundation to create a highly social, interactive destination for
everything from corporate events to family parties and group outings.
