MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
November 6, 2008
Sanders stated that he will be working on other grant programs for next year.
He also stated that the Pedestrian Bridge Project over Highway 36 is a $1 million project and it
would take major funding assistance from Mn Dot to complete this extension that would connect
the Troutbrook Trail.
Morelan commented on the upcoming Rice Street ped and bike project which includes the area from
Roselawn Avenue to County Road J. There will be two public information meetings, with one
being held at our City Hall on November 18`x' and the other at the Shoreview Community Center on
November 20'x', both from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Sanders plans to attend the meetings.
BOARDWALK TRAIL FROM MAPLE LEAF COURT TO WALTER STREET:
Sanders reported that this trail has been completed. Morelan took pictures of the boardwalk and
passed them around for all commissioners to view. Sanders stated it looks very nice and he believes
the use of this trail will increase. The project was completed substantially below the projected
budget cost.
Maida asked if the trail would be maintained during the winter months. Morelan replied that it
would not be maintained but it could be used for cross country skiing. Sanders reported that the
blacktop absorbs the sun so it probably would not have enough snow on it for cross country skiing.
OTHER: GERVAIS BEACH:
Chair Davis commented that when she was at the Gervais Beach Park this summer she was amazed
that there was not very much sandy beach and thought it was in poor condition with gullies eroding
away the beach. Both Maida and Sanders thought it was in fairly good condition when they were at
the park. Morelan commented that some of the sandy beach had been eliminated when Ramsey
County replaced some of the sandy areas with turf. Morelan recommended Davis contact Ramsey
County with her concerns.
Morelan stated last winter Ramsey County had closed the park to lake access to prevent damage to
the turf area. Ice fishermen had to use the Spoon Creek entrance in Maplewood for lake access to
Gervais Lake. Ramsey County will probably restrict Gervais Beach again this year. Morelan will
check on that with Ramsey County.
TERMS OF OFFICE EXPIRING DECEMBER 31, 2008:
Morelan stated the city had received a resignation letter from Jim Fleischhacker on November 3 as
he was moving away. Other commissioners' terms that are expiring are Davis - 3 year term- Davis
stated she is retiring; Neis- 3 year term -she also is retiring; and Fleischhaker's term has one year
remaining.
Morelan remarked that all available commissioner openings are published as soon as they become
available. Davis commented that she will continue to fill in if her position is not filled.
