MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 5, 1994
Wehrle recommended tabling action on Twin Lake Pines
preliminary plat until the next meeting. He felt the
developer should be present to answer the questions raised
by the Commission.
ROY NADEAU JR Sanders stated that someone has suggested planting a tree
MEMORIAL with a plaque in Nadeau Park in memory of Roy Nadeau, Jr.
The Director felt that a couple of Council Members had made
the suggestion and wanted a recommendation from the
Commission.
Wehrle felt that a policy should be developed on planting
trees with plaques in memory of someone. He stated that he
had no problem with the idea to a certain degree. However,
if more people begin to donate trees, it may look cluttered
to see several trees with plaques and it could become a
maintenance item. Sanders suggested placing a durable,
plastic tag on the tree verses a plaque. He stated that
this is what is done at the Arboretum.
Sanders felt that people should be encouraged to plant trees
as memorials, and he stated that he had no problem with
identification tags paid for by the people who donate the
trees. Wehrle stated that he did not have a problem with
planting a tree, but was unsure about a memorial plaque. He
asked if the Commission thought a brass tag attached to a
branch on donated trees would disappear. Wehrle thought a
brass tag would be classier than plastic. Remerowski felt
the tag would disappear if people thought it was of value.
Sanders felt that an inexpensive plastic tag could easily be
replaced if stolen. Remerowski felt that at least five tags
should be purchased for each tree, and the person donating
the tree could have the responsibility of replacing the tag
if it was stolen.
Greger felt that a plaque at City Hall containing names of
people recognized in the community would make more sense.
Johnson felt that people would like to know which tree and
would not know if the names were at City Hall on a plaque.
Remerowski liked the idea of a plaque at City Hall.
Wehrle felt that Greger should research the different
options for memorials.
Wehrle asked if the City should dedicate the tree in memory
of Roy Nadeau, Jr. The Director stated that to his
knowledge, the family has not approached the City at all
regarding this matter. He said he thought it was brought up
at the City level. The Director indicated that the City
Council is looking for a recommendation from the Commission
in recognition of Roy Nadeau, Jr.'s donation of land for
Nadeau Wildlife Park.
-4-
