MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 5, 1994
Department has already discussed some type of memorial
plaque mounted on the ground adjacent to the tree. Holm
questioned the installation of a plaque for a dog.
Greger felt that if Ramsey County wanted to pay for the
plaque, he was okay with the idea. The Director stated that
the City has already committed to the purchase of the tree
and plaque.
Sanders felt that this situation differed from that of
someone wishing to dedicate a tree in a park in memory of
someone. He stated that the tree and plaque would
commemorate an event that actually happened there. Wehrle
felt that the event may not be one that the City should
commemorate. Johnson agreed since the event was a tragedy.
Remerowski felt that the event should not be commemorated,
but the dog that was killed should be remembered. Sanders
felt that the event was justification for doing a plaque
rather than a tag. He stated that the plaque could be
simple and placed next to the tree.
Johnson felt that the plaque may look out of place in the
middle of a park. Sanders stated that it could be placed
along the trail by the apartments so people would read it.
Remerowski felt that plaque should be made of durable
material so that it could not be destroyed. The Director
stated that the Sheriff's Department has discussed placement
of a bronze/metal or stone-etched plaque mounted on a
concrete pedestal at ground level. Hartmann felt that the
plaque would not be seen at ground level by the apartments.
Sanders felt that it should be placed next to the trail.
Johnson felt that the event is tragic and should not be
commemorated on a plaque at the park. Greger stated that it
was a community service that the dog was performing at the
time and that service should be recognized on a plaque at
City Hall.
Holm asked if the City would be setting a precedent in
buying the tree and plaque. The Director felt the City
would not be setting a precedent since the City would be
commemorating an event that took place at the site. Wehrle
had a problem with placing a memorial for the dog in a park
setting. He felt that it could be on a plaque at City Hall.
Remerowski felt that the tree could be planted and dedicated
at the park and the plaque could be placed at City Hall.
Greger suggested planting the tree at City Hall so it would
be close to the plaque. Johnson felt the tree would be nice
in the park.
-6-
