MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 2, 1994
Magnuson concurred with Sanders recommendation. She
commented that residents in the area generally do not want
to pay for sidewalks or maintain them. Wehrle felt
assessment of the sidewalks is a policy that the Commission
did not have to address.
Remerowski felt that Item #6 on the agenda relating to the
need for sidewalks on heavily traveled streets through
residential areas should not be a Parks and Recreation
Commission decision. Wehrle agreed stating that the
Commission should only address sidewalks if they are related
to park system connections.
Wehrle recommended installation of a trail along Jackson
Street and maintaining the access from Australian up to Old
Co. Rd. C. Whether it be installed now or later, at least
the easement should be maintained.
Remerowski asked when the Council needs a recommendation on
the Jackson Street trail. He stated that he would like to
take a look at the area. Magnuson stated that the Council
will be addressing this issue on the 22nd.
Wehrle felt that the installation of a sidewalk in the area
would not affect the park system. Sanders stated that the
trail connection is needed to serve the neighborhood, and he
does not have any objection to the sidewalk either if that
is what the residents want in order to get to the
convenience store.
Wehrle recommended developing the Jackson Street trail and
maintaining the easement up to Australian Avenue whether it
is developed now or in the future and the Commission does
not feel the trail has any relation to the sidewalk issue
along Old County Road C/Lakeshore Avenue so it should be
developed separately.
Motion seconded by Remerowski.
Motion carried 5 - 0.
Sanders stated that when the Commission initially looked at
developing Nadeau Wildlife Park, they had proposed an access
down to Savage Lake from Lake Street, but at the first
neighborhood meeting that was held, this idea was
discouraged by the residents. A home in the area is very
close to the property. All people could do is go down to
view the lake. In addition, there is a culvert in the area
that carries alot of rainfall. He felt that it should not
be developed as a walkway due to the limited use and
intrusion on the private property.
-5-
