MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
August 4, 1994
with the loss of trees and shrubs which could occur with the
construction. He felt that Public Works does not need an 8'
wide trail in order to maintain it since there are other
paths in the City less than 8' wide that they maintain.
Remerowski asked if the present trail gets used. Bruce
stated that it is used a lot, and he felt that a trail is
needed in the area.
Wehrle asked if development of the trail up to Australian
can wait. Bruce felt that it could have waited. However,
now with the curb being added to the street, he felt the
trail must be developed. Judd agreed that the children must
have a place to go.
Bruce stated that the road width is proposed to be increased
by approximately six feet. Wehrle agreed that widening a
road does increase traffic speed.
Judd stated that she was concerned with the trees along the
railroad property since the children cannot be seen in
there.
Magnuson stated that she would like to see the trail qo in,
but she knows there is concern with her daycare. She
indicated that she currently has five families and it will
soon be reduced to four. Therefore, there are four cars
coming in the morning and at 5 p.m. She stated that she has
talked to the families and they indicated that when they are
driving down the street, they are already cautious because
they are used to looking for kids in that neighborhood.
Magnuson did not feel that her daycare was a safety issue.
Judd suggested cleaning some of the brush near the Jackson
Street right-of-way near Australian Avenue to improve
visibility.
Bruce suggested providing screening to homeowners along the
trail such as fencing or shrubs. Wehrle stated that the
Commission is more than willing to work with homeowners on
screening.
Bruce felt that an 8' wide trail scares a lot of people.
Wehrle stated that for multiple use trails, 8' is not
considered wide. He indicated that they would also be
difficult to plow if they were too narrow.
Bruce was also concerned that the trail may be placed too
close to the street. Wehrle felt that Sanders should review
the placement of the trail.
Judd asked if the trail would be lost if it was not put in
with the street. Wehrle stated it would not necessarily be
-9-
