MINUTES <br />Parks & Recreation Commission <br />June 4, 2009 <br />The consensus of the commission was that the improvement of the playground equipment remain <br />as a top priority for Thunder Bay Park, with or without the basketball court construction being <br />accepted as part of the project. Morelan asked Sanders to make a plan design with cost estimates <br />for the total project <br />Chair Fahey stated the process would be to have a neighborhood meeting once the plan design <br />was approved, and then make a recommendation to the city council. <br />OLll <br />BUSINESS: NORTH/SOUTH TRAIL CONNECTION <br />Morelan reported there is a meeting scheduled to meeting with St. Jule personnel next week. <br />Sanders and Holly Larson of the National Park Service will be attending as he will be out of <br />town. <br />OTHER: Morelan provided information about the Parks and Trails and suggested all commissioners sign <br />up for their newsletter. They are having their annual meeting on Thursday, June 25 if anyone <br />wished to attend. <br />Morelan distributed the upcoming Youth Activities Registration flyer, which includes Archery <br />Lessons, Firearm Safety, and Summer Youth Trips. He stated the Firearm Safety Class is very <br />popular and is taught by volunteer instructors who are certified with the DNR. Steinert is one of <br />the instructors. <br />Morelan reported he has ordered a new sign for the Gervais Mill Park entrance as the old <br />one was broken in half He was able to have a new one made at the sane cost as the five signs <br />ordered last year. <br />There has been some non-resident activity on the soccer fields at Pioneer Park. Morelan has <br />requested assistance the Ramsey Comity Sheriff's Department. Morelan stated he would like to <br />keep the soccer fields in great condition for the start of our youth soccer program season in the <br />fall. <br />Sullivan asked if the commissioners were going to tour the remaining parks. They have already <br />toured the Boardwalk at Walter Street, the Gervais Beach Park, Gervais Mills Park, Thunder Bay <br />Park and the Pioneer Park eiih•ance by Centerville Road the past two months. Morelan stated <br />that they typically will not cover them all, but encourages commissioners to visit the remaining <br />parks on their own and bring suggestions for improvement to future meetings. <br />Maida suggested we have a naming contest for the Boardwalk on Walter Street. <br />Page 4 of 5 <br />
