Employee Wellness Reimbursement
As employers continue to focus on increasing healthcare costs, some organizations have
incorporated wellness reimbursements to incentivize employees to focus on personal health.

Surveyed Community Analysis
Surveyed communities were asked to outline if their municipality provides wellness
reimbursement for items such as a gym membership or fitness/sports equipment. Respondents
could outline if reimbursements were provided through insurance, the municipality directly, or
other methods. Four of twelve communities provide reimbursement either through insurance or
directly. One respondent noted they have an on-site workout room.

Is your municipality providing an employee wellness reimbursement?
(Examples include reimbursement for gym membership, fitness/sports equipment, etc.)
For those offering benefits, the amount annually was requested. Response included:
• Free membership at local YMCA (as long as utilizing the membership) or $99 family
membership at all Twin Cities YMCAs.
• $480 towards health premiums, up to 16 hours of PTO for completing health and
wellness activities, and $300 to stay active. Additionally, those on our health plan can
also earn up to $345 using our wellness platform.
• $240.00 for qualifying expenses

City Council Request
Discuss and provide direction around including this type of benefit offering for 2025. This type
of benefit would be considered taxable and provided as a reimbursement for qualifying expenses.
If directed to explore, staff would review policies received, provide a recommendation on the
amount and budgetary impact, and draft a personnel policy update for consideration.
