MINUTES
PARKS & REC COMMISSION
JULY 11, 2024

2
The Parks and Recreation Director commented that the subcommittee began with zero resources,
and it is very impressive at how quickly this has moved along and come to fruition. He noted
that some residents came to Music in the Park just for the Art in the Park element.

WAYFINDING SUBCOMMITTEE
Commissioner Mui commented that the subcommittee stalled out with the transition in staff and
plans to get a date on the calendar for the next meeting with the hope to complete the project this
year.

VOLLEYBALL COURT DISCUSSION
The Parks and Recreation Director commented that this arose from discussion at the June
meeting, as there was a previous sand volleyball court that was removed and there seemed to be
desire to pursue a new location and different type of volleyball court. He asked for input from
the Commission on what the court may look like and where it may go.

Commissioner Churcher commented that she liked the idea within the Master Plan for Pioneer
Park, which had the volleyball court in the grass rather than sand. She believed that Pioneer Park
would be the best location but noted that there is a lot of greenspace at Nadeau.

Chair Horwath commented that he would suggest not placing the court in the same location it
previously existed as it was ignored. He liked the idea of the amenity being visible to passersby
so that it could be noticed.

Commissioner Williams suggested Spooner as a possible location.

Commissioner Schletty commented that he does notice people setting up volleyball nets in
Spooner. He stated that Spooner has some other things people can do while they are waiting or
for kids to do while their parents play.

Commissioner Owens commented that he more envisioned an outdoor hard court, noting that the
surface could be used for other things as well.

Commissioner Churcher commented that she would be fine with that as well, she just did not
want sand.

Commissioner Schletty commented that perhaps if that path is chosen, the sport court surface
could be used for other things as well.

Commissioner Mui commented on how the wayfinding symbols for amenities could be carried
over to the website, noting that residents could then select the icon and the website could list the
parks that have that amenity.

Chair Horwath commented that perhaps this would be a good time for a tour to find out where
volleyball and/or a multi-use sport court could be best located.
