MINUTES
City Council
(Cont'd.)
February 21, 1980
Mayor Flanson asked the owners of the property if they wished to address
the Council or audience regarding the development.
Mr. McNamara, one of the owners of the property, stated that he and Mr.
Jacobson own about 4 to 5 acres of property on the northeast corner of
Jackson and Little Canada Road. They are considering selling approximately
two acres of the residential portion of this property to the City for
the senior citizen housing development and donating another acre to
the City which would remain green area for the use of the residents of
the development.
Mr. McNamara was asked how far the railroad tracks were from the property.
Mr. McNamara replied that on one end of the property the tracks were a
short City block away from the property and on the other end the tracks
were a long City block away from the property.
Councilman Nadeau asked if this land was starting to get into the low
area. Mr. McNamara replied that there is one acre that is low and the
rest of the land comes to full level.
Councilman Fahey stated that he did not realize that this property was
so close to residential homes.
A member of the audience stated that she liked the idea of the senior
citizen housing development. She also stated that it was better than
having more apartments in the area. The neighbors were only concerned
that they might be required to pay for sidewalks put in on their property.
Council stated that sidewalks would not be required on this property,
but only around the building housing the senior citizens.
Mr. Carrier stated that this development was favorable to him.
Councilman Nadeau informed members of the audience that the development
would not consist of townhouse-type buildings. Councilman Fahey stated
that it would probably be a 3-story, wooden building, but would have
much more green area than an apartment building.
Nadeau commented that if the development went in by the Market Place it
might be a problem for the senior citizens as far as safety is concerned
with kids that might be hanging out in the shopping center.
Fahey stated that the Scheier property was not desirable due to the
concessions that Mr. Scheier would require the City grant him on his
remaining property. Fahey also stated that there would be problems
getting an easement from Mr. Cardinal to give the seniors access to
the Market Place. Fahey stated that he still would be more interested
in a site closer to the Market Place.
Mayor Hanson informed the audience that the building the City is considering
would have 60 units. Councilman DeBace stated that the square footage of
the units could range from 600 to 1,000 square feet.
Page -4-
