MINUTES
City Council
(Cont'd.)
March 26, 1980
Mayor Flanson informed the Council that it would take a motion from
one of the Councilpersons who teas 9.n opposition to the senior
citizen development in the area of Jackson and Little Canada Road
to reconsider the project.
Mayor Hanson stated that he was not opposed to housing for the elderly
in Little Canada. Flanson stated he was opposed to the hastiness the
Council has gone into this subject. Hanson stated that he knows there
is a need. I-Janson questioned whether the City would be able 'to take
care of this need for all the people they would like 'to. Flanson also
commented that the City would have no choice in who qualifies for the
subsidized housing.
Mr.s. Scalze stated that she felt everything moved too fast. Scalze
stated that she was not in favor of rezoning if anyone in 'the
neighborhood was against it. Scalze commented that she knew of four
people of the Jackson-Little Canada Road neighborhood who were against
the rezoning.
Mayor Hanson asked the Council if there was a motion to reconsider the
senior citizen housing development in the area of Jackson and Little
Canada Road. There was no motion. Hanson s{:aced that this was a dead
issue and recommended that Council move on.
Councilman Fahey suggested that perhaps the Council should have the
people from HUD look at some alternative sites in Little Canada for
this housing development. HUD could then make recommendations on
'the appropriateness of the sites.
Councilman De¢ace stated that the Council should first consider
alternative sites and determine which meet the Council's approval.
Councilwoman Scalze stated that some of the sites the Council had
talked about do not have sewer. This is a requirement that must be
met.
Fahey stated that he has still not ruled out the Jackson-Little Canada
Road site. Fahey commented that it was unrealistic to say that a piece
of property should not have to be rezoned for this project.
The City Clerk stated that the Archdiocese has said that the property
near the Marketplace meets their approval. The City Clerk suggested
that perhaps the City could get the additional money to purchase the
property from HUD.
Councilman Nadeau suggested the LaMay property on the corner of
Jackson and Little Canada Road. Nadeau informed the Council that this
property was commercial. Nadeau also stated that the way the Council
is going now, the City will never get housing for the elderly.
Mayor Hanson stated that this was a dead issue, and the Council wi17
consider this subject at some other time.
Page -2-
