MIPlUTES
City Council
Plovember 19, 1980
Sharon Clausen of 'the Canadian Days Committee appeared before the Council.
Clausen stated that Canadian Days has gotten a lot of publicity, and
therefore with the publicity the Celebration has gotten a lot of undesirable
things. Clausen stated that the Canadian Days Committee is aware of the
problems it has and the Committee will face these problems. Ms.
Clausen also stated that no member of the Committee gets any remuneration
for their work on the Committee or their expenses. Clausen also
commented that the Celebration is a success. It is enjoyed by many
people from both Little Canada and from Thunder Bay.
Ms. Clausen stated that the Vadnais Fleights festival has gambling going
on at it. The City of Vadnais Heights honors the volunteers that put on
their festival, however, the City of Little Canada puts down the volunteers
that work on Canadian Days.
Clausen stated that there is no point going on with Canadian Days unless
it has the sanction of the City of Little Canada. Clausen stated that
the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department was present at tonight's meeting,
and perhaps they will realize that Canadian Days needs their help.
Clausen also stated that she thinks the City should contribute some
financial backing to Canadian Days as it contributes greatly to the
Recreation program and the Senior Citizens organization. Both these
groups has money going out in salaries, where Canadian Days does not.
Councilman Fahey stated that it was his understanding that Canadian Days
was to become self-sufficient. Fahey commented that the citizens of Little
Canada look at where the money is going. Fahey also stated that Canadian
Days is only one weekend out of the year.
Ms. Clausen informed Mr. Fahey that more people enjoy Canadian Days than
any other activity.
Fahey stated that the Canadian Days Celebration was a zoo last summer.
Mr. Fahey also stated that some of the school grounds were ruined, and
this hurts the City's reputation. Mr. Forsberg stated that the school
grounds have not yet been repaired.
One of the Committee members invited Councilpersons to join the Committee
and give them help and suggestions.
Fahey stated that he was not suggesting that Canadian Days be eliminated.
Fle was saying that it should become self-sufficient. Fahey commented that
enough money is made on the concessions to do this. Fahey also questioned
how the various concessions the Committee controls were being awarded.
Mr. Fahey was informed that the beer concession, the food concession and
the third tent were being rotated each year between the Recreation
Department, the Lyon's Club and the Snowmobile Club.
Mrs. Scalze stated that the Council does not want to take an anti-Canadian
Days position. Scalze did question to what extent the City should fund
Canadian Days. Scalze felt that Canadian Days did not fall into the same
category as the senior citizens or recreation. Scalze looks on these two
organizations as social services.
Page -2-
