MINUTES
City Council
November 19, 1980
Councilman Fahey stated that he agreed with Mrs. Scalze's statements.
Ms. Clausen stated that there was more at Canadian Days for everyone to
enjoy.
Mugs Nardini stated that she served on the Committee this year. Nardini
felt there was a lack of communication on the subject of police protection.
Mrs. Nardini stated that Canadian Days is the only event that offers
something for the person that falls between the senior citizen and the
very young. Nardini did not feel the funding for Canadian Days should be
cut back.
One of the Committee members commented that the merchants in Little Canada
benefit from Canadian Days.
Mrs. Scalze asked if the Committee was asking for the same amount of money
each year. Ms. Clausen replied that it was.
Mrs. Nardini stated that the money goes hand-in-hand with Council backing.
Mrs. Scalze stated that the Committee should have come in at budget time
and pushed their cause with the Council. It was commented that the Committee
was just sorting themselves out from the Celebration at budget time and
were not prepared to meet with the Council then.
Ms. Clausen also stated that the Committee does raise $15,000 for Canadian
Days on its own. Also the Lyons Club, the Recreation group and the Snowmobile
Club also make money off of Canadian Days. Ms. Clausen also stated that
it was the City in the form of Ray Hanson that approached citizens with the
idea of Canadian Days.
Fahey stated that he will give his support as a Councilman to Canadian Days.
Fahey stated that his biggest problem is the lack of police protection.
Mayor Hanson commented that the Committee thought there would be police
protection at the Celebration. Hanson suggested that the Committee pursue
this subject with the Sheriff's Department. Hanson stated that a commitment
should be gotten on paper.
Fahey asked how many sheriff's deputies could be gotten for this type of
festival. Fahey also questioned if the City should allocate additional
funds for police protection.
Captain Falvey of the Sheriff's Department stated that there is one deputy
on duty in the City at all times. Falvey commented that for activities as
the Canadian Days Gelebration the Department tries to get volunteer reserves.
The quantity of reserves depends on the other activities that are going on
in the County at the same time. Captain Falvey also stated that arrangements
for reserves and additional deputies should be made some time in advance
of the activity in question. Falvey stated that the summer schedule is
usually made up right after Winter and before the Summer activities begin.
Dennis Forsberg stated that Chuck Zacharias was at Canadian Days and he
felt there should have been 15 deputies on duty.
Page -3-
