MINUTES
City Council
November 21, 1980
Councilwoman Scalze asked what it would cost to hire 15 deputies.
Falvey commented that first the Department would try to get as many
volunteer reserves as it could. Any deputies that would have to be
paid would be somewhere between $8.25 and $10.00 per hour. Falvey
stated that no benefits would have to be paid and probably no charge
for the cars. Captain Falvey suggested April for setting up the police
protection for Canadian Days.
Mayor Hanson stated that he supported Canadian Days. Hanson suggested
that the Committee get an early start on setting up police protection
with the Sheriff's Department.
Fahey stated that he felt Canadian Days was a good function, but that
it had to be controlled better than it was last year. Fahey also suggested
that perhaps the City could provide additional funding for police protection.
Fahey stated that 1981 is the year to correct the problems. Fahey felt
Canadian Days would be great if there was no personal property damage and
the merchants in the City are making money.
Dennis Forsberg stated that he, too, supported Canadian Days. Forsberg
felt if the Sheriff's Department gave the Celebration some help, the
problems would be solved.
Mr. Fahey introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION N0. 80-11-450 - STATING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL WILL
CONSIDER ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR CANADIAN DAYS IN APRIL OF 1981
FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING ADDITIONAL NECESSARY POLICE
PROTECTION FOR THE CANADIAN DAYS CELEBRATION IN 1981 TO BE
COORDINATED WITH THE PROJECTED NEED THAT CAN BE DETERMINED AT
7HE TIME WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE CANADIAN DAYS COMMITTEE
AND THE RAP7SEY COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Mrs. Scalze.
ayes (3) Fahey, Scalze, Hanson.
Ndyes (0
Resolution declared adopted.
This resolution appears in Resolution Book No. 6, Pages 289 and 290.
Ramsey Mayor Hanson stated that the City Council has approved the 1981 budget
County for police protection. However, the City has requested that the Sheriff's
Sheriff's Department attend tonight's meeting to discuss some concerns the City has
Department regarding their police protection.
Contract
For 1981 Mayor Hanson stated that the concerns he is aware of are the policing
of solely County roads and not City streets; lack of patrolling of liquor
establishment parking lots, and the lack of the Sheriff's Department
providing ambulance service.
Page -4-
