<br /> MINUTES <br /> City Council <br /> November 19, 1980 <br /> Captain Falvey also stated that Unity is the only ambulence service in <br /> existence at this time. <br /> Councilman Fahey felt that the City of Maplewood would not want to contract <br /> with Little Canada for ambulence service. Fahey thought Maplewood would <br /> feel they have all they can handle. <br /> Mugs Nardini stated that she felt the Sheriff's Department should transport <br /> all cases other than those that fall under the criteria the Sheriff's <br /> Department has set up for calling Unity. <br /> Captain Falvey stated that this is what the Sheriff's Department is <br /> planning to do. However, Falvey felt changes in State Law could a1 ter <br /> this. Falvey suggested that the Sheriff's Department and the City meet <br /> and make plans for what may be coming in the future. <br /> Councilman Fahey asked the Sheriff's Department to explain the additional <br /> deputy the City will be paying for in 1981. <br /> Captain Falvey responded that between certain hours there will be an <br /> additional deputy on duty in the City fu71-time. The deputy will work <br /> approximately 200 days per year, which is less holidays and vacation time <br /> and weekends. The deputy will probably have Sundays and Mondays off. <br /> The deputy will work from Tuesday through Saturday and will probably <br /> begin work at 6 P.M. or 7 P.M. and work for eight hours. <br /> Councilwoman Scalze stated that police protection will cost the City <br /> $22.87 per person. Mayor Hanson stated that the City provides fire and <br /> police protection to the City at a cost of 10¢ per day per person. <br /> Fahey asked Captain Falvey how the Sheriff's Department feels about <br /> providing police protection to the City. Captain Falvey stated that the <br /> Sheriff's Department feels it is the best way and is a benefit to Ramsey <br /> County. The Sheriff's Department has a lot of resources it can move in <br /> if necessary. It is an advantage to the City, because when the service <br /> is really needed, there is a lot of resources that can be utilized. <br /> Mayor Hanson asked if process servers working in the City can provide <br /> law enforcement protection. Captain Falvey responded that they could. <br /> Fahey asked if the reserves of the Sheriff's Department carried guns. <br /> Captain Falvey responded that they did and they received training in <br /> their use and are licensed. <br /> Councilwoman Scalze stated that the Recreation Department would like to <br /> see more tickets issued in the City parks for people using the parks after <br /> hours. Captain Falvey stated that the Sheriff's Department can do this. <br /> Mayor Hanson asked the City Flttorney to research the Minnesota statutes <br /> of 1957 and 1959 mentioned in the Sheriff's Contract and give the Council <br /> a report on what is included under these statutes. <br /> Page -7- <br /> <br />
