MINUTES
City Council
September 30, 1981
f4rs. Scalze suggested that the City advertise the fact that the
tennis court is available for use by Little Canada residents,
Mr. Fahey stated that the Recreation Director should try to minimize
the more highly paid people doing the grass cutting. Fahey stated
that the Director should try to bring in lower paid people as often
as possib1e.
Mrs. Scalze suggested that perhaps the Recreation Departmerit should
try to get someone next summer to work 20 or 30 hours per week just
to take care of the grass cutting.
Mrs. Nardini asked what the position of Hockey Coordinator involved.
Mr. Morelan explained this position to the Counci1.
Mr. Manson asked where the money collected from kids participating
in hockey to pay for ice time went. Mr. Nanson was concerned that
this money did not show up in the budget. Mr. Morelan replied that
this money was paid directly to the arena.
Mrs. Nardini commented that she felt it was unfair to give part-time
people the same rate of increase as the full-time staff received.
Mayor Hanson asked if the City was covered if a Recreation Department
employee became injured on the job. The City Clerk replied t.hat the
City carries Workers Compensation coverage for these employees.
This coverage is based on the City`s total payroll.
Mr. Fahey stated that if a person who has not worked for the City
for a couple of years begins working for the City again, that
employee should be started out ~ the minimum wage. Mr. Fahey
stated that the City should leave the Recreation Director some
flexibility, but the Council has made their feelings known to Mr.
Morelan.
Mr. Nanson stated that the Council has given Mr. More1an some direction,
and that P~r. Jim Morelan should get the job done at the least cost to
the City. Mr. Hanson also stated that when a vacancy occurs in the
Recreation Department staff, or any oP the staff, the Council should
be notified so that a notice could be put in the paper advertising
the position.
Mrs. Nardini expressed concern that there were vouchers submitted for
a lot of field work during the Canadian Days Celebration that was not
charged back to the Recreation Association. Nardini commented that
this work was done for a tournament that was put on by an independent
group in order to make money.
Mr, Fahey stated that he did not think most cities would charge for
the maintenance of their ball fields.
Nardini stated that this is the type of thing that the Recreation
Association should volunteer their services to do the work because
it is for a fund raising activity. Mr. Morelan stated that the
amount of money spent on this is a drop in the bucket compared to
the amount of volunteer work done by the Rec Association.
Page -16-
