NiINUTES <br />City Council <br />December 16, 1981 <br />not in favor of the building inspector cfoing fire inspections. <br />Mr. Locke commented that with Little Canada's valuation, he did not <br />think the City could get the job it wants in 12 hours per week. <br />The Counci7 thanked Mr. Locke and informed him they would get back <br />to him. Council also stated that they will have to work out the sa1ary <br />and number of hours with regard to the position. <br />The next applicant that was interviewed was Walter Johnson. Mr. Johnson <br />is a freelance architect and was building inspector in the City of <br />Eden Prairie from May, 1977, to June, 1981. <br />Mrs. Nardini informed Mr. Johnson that the City is currently not getting <br />the job done in the bui1ding inspection department and the City has no <br />records and in some cases inspections are not being made. Mrs. Nardini <br />informed Mr. Johnson that the City currently has a new zoning code. <br />Nardini also corranented that the City is looking for someone to spend <br />more time than the current inspector, but the City is unsure as to the <br />number of hours that will be needed. <br />Mr. Johnson informed the Council that he ran the building inspection <br />department for Eden Prairie. That department also did the heating and <br />plumbing inspections in addition to building inspections. Mr. Johnson <br />stated that he did plan reviews and all commercial inspections. Mr. <br />Johnson stated that he oversaw the spot checks and plan reviews for <br />residential properties. Mr. Johnson commented that he oversaw any <br />disputes 9n the building inspection area for Eden Prairie. He also <br />revised the forms for the department and updated the records. <br />Mr. Fahey asked Mr. Johnson if he had actual building experience. <br />Mr. Johnson stated that he has never been a contractor, but has built <br />a couple of homes uiith his brother. Johnson also stated that when <br />other inspectors were on vacations, he filled in for them. <br />Mr. Johnson stated that he resigned from Eden Prairie in May so that he <br />could get back into his architectura1 business. He would like to get <br />back into building inspection parttime as it is an education and will <br />keep him up-to-date. <br />P1r. Johnson stated that he understood there were no benefits involved <br />with the posi'tion. Johnson stated that he was not qualified to do <br />electrical inspections and would prefer not to, b~it could do heating <br />and plumbing inspections, however, would prefer not to. Johnson stated <br />that he could fill in if' the other inspectors were on vacation and perhaps <br />they could for him also. <br />Mrs. Scalze asked Mr. Johnson if he would be willing to keep an eye out <br />in the City for violations to the City's zoning code. Mr. Johnson stated <br />that it has been his experience that this is a part of the building <br />inspection department's job. Mrs. Scalze informed Mr. Johnson th~t the <br />City currently has a new Zoning Ordinance. <br />Page -3- <br />
